User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:83.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/83.0
STR:
1 select the url bar
2 type something
3 select search engine
Actual: Asks for confirmation (to use that search engine).
Expected: Search without confirmation as in previous versions of Firefox.
Is there a way to disable this confirmation step.
thanks

Bugbug thinks this bug should belong to this component, but please revert this change in case of error.

You can press shift when you select the search engine and it will search straight away.
that seems to work, it would be great if it could be done without it, just like it was before.

The team has discussed this issue at length and we're happy with the current solution of offering Shift as an override. The new behaviour isn't so much a "confirmation" step as it is giving the user more flexibility. You can decide to search with that particular engine before, during, or after you type your search query and you can get suggestions and history for that engine as you type. See more at bug 1671815 comment 1.

This change upsets me a lot, and I created a Bugzilla account to ask you to please reconsider your decision.
I'm not using search engine suggestions, so the extra click (or shift-click, or Enter) offers no benefit to me at all. I see that you rejected enhancement bug 1684280 and I somewhat agree that having special rules that create implicit connections between multiple settings is not optimal.
But perhaps adding the browser.urlbar.update2.oneOffsRefresh preference back in would be possible with reasonable effort?
