I am not sure if this is the download manager or the browser generally, but it concerns mozilla

Even if you tell Mozilla to NOT open anything, it will open a save dialog.

Mac OS X has a default download (set in the system preferences) save directory and any downloads should be saved here (the save dialog doesn't default there).

(it would also be nice if it didn't ask for download/open-with as a default)

I see this problem in Mozilla 1.1

If the reporters issue is the same as mine, the issue is that you can set 'foo'
as your download folder, then begin dowloading 'bar.app' either by
option-clicking the link or choosing 'Save Link Target As...' from the link
context menu, but when you do, you always get the save dialog.  This is bad
because 99% of the time you want the default, meaning the file saved to the
default directory with its original name.  The actual behavior is that it always
displays a dialog you just click through.  The behavior I would prefer is for
there to be a way to ask the browser to skip the file dialog, unless there is a
name conflict.  Maybe option-click just downloads, while 'Save Link Target
As...' would put up the dialog.
