Mono audio plays through center channel on 5.1 instead of stereo channels

Steps to reproduce:
I've noticed this in occasional videos lately, but rarely, and I chalked it up to bad encoding. But this time I checked all of the audio, video, and A/V streams in Audicity with youtube_dl, and every one of them played high frequencies. Chrome also plays it normally.

Actual results:
Audio plays with a highpass of about 1kHz: Bass is present, and hints of midrange, but nothing else.
Expected results:
The audio should sound as it does in other browsers and while playing the downloaded audio locally.

I realized earlier that it might have to do with my 5.1 speaker setup run through stereo headphones, and I was correct. I unplugged my headphones to get full 5.1 and now normal audio is coming out of the center channel (leakage in the sides is possibly the receiver mixing in some bass). I'm not sure if this is a Firefox specific thing, but it does feel closely related to the old bugs of mono only coming out of the left speaker, #979705 and #1582442.
I guess this could be considered invalid, lying to the application that a center channel is available and active, but using headphones on a receiver that doesn't internally downmix is very normal, and it's quite annoying to change the channel count in Windows settings, especially since all other applications will just double mono to stereo.

I think I agree with you, in general, I expect mono audio to come out of the stereo pair on a 5.1 setup, not the center channel (I'm sure other people will have the opposite expectation). I think it's also fair to say that the low-pass shouldn't happen (we don't do any crossover filtering ourselves).
Would you mind explaining your setup and what you're seeing, so I can try to replicate it and debug this properly ? I have a few 5.1 (or more) sound cards lying around I should be able to use to make sure this behaves properly, but I don't exactly understand what is plugged where in your case, and what does the low-pass filtering, and where the headphones are plugged in, etc., sorry.

Hi, I also tried to reproduce this issue with a Logitech 5.1 surround system and the Realtek HD driver installed where I could select the 5.1 surround option, for me the videos sounds exactly the same in Firefox 84.0.2 as it does in Chrome or Microsoft Edge, I did encounter some issues with the Bass at first (it wouldnt work with either Chrome or Firefox) only with Desktop apps like Winamp or Windows Media player would work.
Maybe a few extra steps might help reproduce this issue ? maybe a different link ?
Also for me, some sound does come out of the 2 front speakers but most of it its comming out of the Center one.
After changing the options to Stereo from the Realtek manager , there is more sound coming from the Front speakers than the Center one.
I'm not that familiar with these options but if you would like me to try certain settings or options please need info me on this bug.
