I don't normally launch Thunderbird 68.10.0 from Ubuntu from the terminal on Ubuntu 18.04 Gnome.
Doing so opened Thunderbird, and I was able to use it without a problem.
Does the same problem occur launching from the application's icon? You could also try "thunderbird --safe-mode" from the terminal.
Version 68 is way past EOL and there are no other reports. You might want to ask on Thunderbird Support

The problem also occurs when Thunderbird is launched by clicking on its icon.
"thunderbird --safe-mode" seems to work, but without email accounts set up, Thunderbird is also pretty useless.

I'm confused.
You opened Thunderbird for the first time to create email accounts, or already have them setup?
Opening in safe mode will allow you to use your accounts.
This is a support issue, not a bug.

I have already set up email accounts and used Thunderbird for almost a year more or less without problems. Now all of a sudden Thunderbird does not work anymore.

See comment #1, or ask at Ask Ubuntu or Ubuntu Forums.
There is no bug here.
