User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.14; rv:84.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/84.0
Steps to reproduce:
Open a new message, enter subject and body text.
When I send it, everything is fine,
when saved as draft, the subject is replaced by three dots.
Appears since version 78 / Mac OS 10.14.6.
Actual results:
No subject in the subject field and list view, just "..."
Expected results:
The entered subject value being saved, showing up in the field and the list view.
I found the earliest instance on Nov. 6th 2020 in my Trash.
A hint: I opened one of them from the Trash and when I closed it - the subject was back!!! See screenshot - the one below the bold ... looked identical (...) before I opened it. There must be a wrong path somewhere.

I would class it as S3 - it doesn't cause serious harm, but is annoying, since you can recognise your messages only by the addressee or by opening it.

No other reports of this afaik.
It's not an encrypted draft, right?
Does it happen with Thunderbird started in safe mode?
Try rebuilding folder index:
Right click on Folder and select 'Properties'
click on 'Repair folder'
click on OK
Did this have any effect ?
Is 'Drafts' located in a pop or imap account ?
Is 'Drafts' folder a 'Unified' view folder ?

@Wayne: it is not encrypted. It doesn't change in safe mode. But I regained the subject after tossing it into the trash and opening from there. Wouldn't do that in real life ;)
@Anje: it is IMAP. It happens in all draft instances and shows in the virtual unified folder, too.
Repair only changed the order (I prefer new@top), nothing else.

When I return the drafts from the trash to drafts, the subject is there.
As soon as I save it -> ... same as before - three dots.
hopefully this time my upload worked: debugging info

The draft subject is stored protected, inside the message. Until it's locally decrypted only the dots will show.

I can confirm that the occurrences are very similar to #1666005 - but I don't use encryption.

A report in Support Forum:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1372785
User info:
Thunderbird version is : 91.7.0 (64-bit)
On Linux Mint 20
create a new template for one of my accounts. It works fine except it does not save the subject as I want. When I save my template, the subject is replaced by three dots "..." instead of the title I set.
Plus, when I open the template (to edit it or write a mail based on it), the Subject field do display "..." instead of the title I used when creating the template.

Marking as duplicate.
Note I cannot prevent that the message is initially saved with ... subject.
However, the intention is, as soon as the draft is accessed the first time, the subject should be restored.
This isn't working currently, but there is hope we have a fix in bug 1666005.
