Product and UX are hoping we can simplify some of our doorhangers as part of the Proton project.

One of the up-front changes being suggested is to simplify the Save Password doorhanger by omitting the "V" at the end of the button list (which is where the "Never Save" option is), and instead just offer "Save" and "Never Save" as options.

There are 3 outcomes we are offering the user here.

  1. Do nothing - don't save or update the login. We'll continue to ask again next time. I.e. there are 0 side-effects from the user entering login details into a form
  2. Do save/update: the new/updated record will be saved and potentially sync'd to other devices
  3. Never save: don't update logins.json, and create a new entry in the exception list so we never prompt again for this origin. This list is managed in preferences.

Our doorhangers don't have a close button, so "Don't save" is the only way to dismiss the prompt without any side-effect. The need to not save (but allow for future prompts to save) is an important option. It comes up for example if the user is logging into a site with a different username to the one they normally use. My 2c is that removing this functionality for the sake of simplifying the doorhanger/prompt experience is not a good trade-off. I don't have strong opinions on exactly how we present the choices, just that all 3 outcomes should be offered.

It's not clear that we're actually doing this yet, so please don't assign yourself to this / begin work until I comment in here further.

UX is aware of this issue and agrees that the interaction is confusing on these buttons. For Proton, UX scope on this panel was limited to updating the design components and strings only, and did not include making significant changes to the behavior of the panel itself.

Mike, do we still need this bug or should we close it and open another with what we do want to change for Proton?

Yeah, let's close this out. The Save/Update password panel is getting some stylistic changes, but those should be in a separate bug.
