Tested with the latest Firefox 86.0a1 Nightly on Windows 8.1. I rarely use the stub installer and don't know if this was ever different.

I tried to pave over the current Firefox Nightly en-US install with the latest version because updates had been turned off for an issue:

  1. Get the stub installer (did this by downloading the setup.exe from the build signing task on Treeherder).
  2. Launch the stub installer.
  3. Pick the folder in which Nightly is already installed (have multiple install locations, e.g. for English and German).
  4. Run the installer.

Actual result:
Firefox icon gets pinned to the task bar, install folder is empty except for uninstaller logs, launching Nightly opens the German Nightly installation.

Expected result:
Installed in selected folder and English Nightly launched.

Severity: -- → S2
Summary: stub installer claims to install into chosen folder but reuses existing installation in other folder with other locale → full installer claims to install into chosen folder but reuses existing installation in other folder with other locale

Hey Sebastian,

Can you confirm this is actually the stub installer? We're thinking it's actually the full installer (since the stub doesn't let you pick install location)...but figured it's worth checking here with you just in case...

The setup.exe in the build signing task causes the issue (reproduced again today) and is <1MB. There is also a setup-stub.exe file. The full setup installer is an artifact of the repack. The setup.exe (<1MB) might be an intermediate artifact which is not supposed to be run. Please close as invalid if appropriate.

Ah, okay, thank you for clarifying. Yes, that setup.exe is an intermediate artifact; it's the executable part of the full installer before it's been packaged together with the app files. It's present on its own here because it has to be signed on its own, but it doesn't do anything useful until it's finished being packaged (I wish I knew what task that actually happened in, but I'm not sure). The setup-stub.exe in there should be a working stub installer, just not compressed yet.
