I have a folder, where procmail occasionally adds some mails.
Mozilla can handle it properly except one case, when Mail is running, and a new
mail comes in. Then trying view that folder causes and endless (not tested...)
waiting loop, which can be only interrupted by selecting an other folder. If
this happens, that folder is unaccessible until I quit and restart the whole
Mozilla application (then works again, no mail is lost).

I think Mozilla should follow the behavior of mutt: when the user moves into or
inside the folder, it checks the file for new mails, and adds them to the index.

David, is there any case where this wouldn't work/happen now?

I would think this would work - we should detect that the file size has changed and reparse the local mail folder. Though the new messages won't have x-mozilla-status headers, which may cause some fun later.

cc for other thoughts on comment 2. And with regard to "the new messages won't have x-mozilla-status headers, which may cause some fun later", revisit in context of fixes landed from the past year.

also I'm not quite sure how to interpret comment 0's "unaccessible". Does that simply mean the folder view doesn't update, or, that nothing in that folder is accessible?

if/when the folder is compacted, we will add the x-mozilla-status header.
