User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:85.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/85.0
Steps to reproduce:
- zoom in with Ctrl + Num+ to 125% for example
- restart program
Actual results:
Zoom level is lost, reset to default, 100%
Expected results:
I think the zoom level should be saved, as in Firefox for example, at least as option.
I had addon to preserve the zoom level, but it was not working good for Write/New mail window and it doesn't work completely in the new Thunderbird version.
I miss also the zoom toolbar buttons for main window and Write/New mail window, as in Firefox.
I understand that this is an enhancement request but I strongly believe it should be considered. As more and more people change over to 2K or 4K monitors, it becomes a more widespread pain.

Copying Firefox's "Default zoom"-feature would be nice, allowing the user to set it at for example 130% by default for any message, both when opened as well as in the Message preview pane.
Firefox allows overriding the default zoom on domain basis, which would also be an awesome feature to have in Thunderbird, in this case on a sender-basis, probably domain-level?
So if for example an email from info@example.org looks great at the default 130% zoom, nothing needs to be done, since the text and images are already magnified 130%. But if messages from info@example.com look too small, the user should be able to press Ctrl
+ +
, and those messages now displayed at zoom-level 140%.
Also, this 140% zoom for messages from *@example.com should persist, and be remembered next time Thunderbird is opened:
- Messages from *@example.com are shown at 140%
- Messages from *@example.org are shown at the default 130%

With older versions of Thunderbird there was an addon called Auto Zoomer that could persist the zoom level.
It is not compatible with newer versions of TB.
This combined with the growing number of high res / dpi monitors should prioritize this very simple (IMO) change
Please somehow allow users to save their preferred zoom setting between sessions. Since using a 4k monitor all email texts are very small and almost impossible to read. This is a real problem for 4k users- try it yourself.
You surely don't want user to change to GMail etc. just because this little change is not implemented.

Yes, please allow a preferred zoom setting or equivalent solution. Something that makes reading messages consistently easier.
I'm using this workaround for years:
Settings - Font & Colors - Advanced - set preferred font size for all size fields here.
It's possible to use also dark mode for all emails:
Settings - Font & Colors - Colors
Uncheck option "Use system colors"
Override the colors specified by the content with my selections above: Always
I'm using very dark grey for background and light grey for font, light blue for links, RGB codes:
- Text 200-200-200
- Background 32-32-32
- Unvisited Links 184-208-232
- Visited Links 120-144-168
@dreamer8 Wake up! You have commented on a completely different bug!

First part is about this bug, it's a workaround for zoom, second part is different, but a bit related with this either, perhaps it should not be here, but it's impossible to edit post.
@dreamer8 That's as maybe, but you're watering down our request by giving them an excuse to do nothing.

This post is 3 years old, so it could be useful for some users - and perhaps someone from Thunderbird will find this issue and it will be finally solved.

Please vote for the implementation of a Default-Zoom-Setting here:

Lets finally get rid of this ridiculous annoyance !
