Mozilla 1.0 When Forwarding As Attachment a message I have received in my Inbox, the intended recipient receives two messages, my new forwarded one and (seemingly) the original message that I forward. Looking at the source, it appears that normally when composing a message, Mozilla intends any occurence of 'From' at the start of a line. However, when forwarding a message, Mozilla sometimes sends '>From' at the start of a line of that forwarded message, which is interpreted by most mail readers as a new message. Included is the source of one such message sent from Mozilla 1.0 -- Begin Example Message From - Tue Sep 17 09:08:46 2002 X-Mozilla-Status: 0001 X-Mozilla-Status2: 10800000 Message-ID: <3D86809E.50105@watri.uwa.edu.au> Date: Tue, 17 Sep 2002 09:08:46 +0800 From: Tom Triglone <triglone@watri.uwa.edu.au> User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.0.0) Gecko/20020530 X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: toby-D Tomlin <tomlin-t@watri.uwa.edu.au> Subject: [Fwd: Your Quokka Advert has Listed!] Content-Type: multipart/mixed; boundary="------------000606070501070108050100" This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --------------000606070501070108050100 Content-Type: text/html; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"> <html> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;charset=ISO-8859-1"> <title></title> </head> <body> Toby,<br> &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; my online add appeared the next day.<br> <br> tom.<br> <pre class="moz-signature" cols="$mailwrapcol">-- --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tom Triglone <a class="moz-txt-link-abbreviated" href="mailto:triglone@watri.uwa.edu.au">triglone@watri.uwa.edu.au</a> Engineer Building: Mail: Room G29 WATRI WATRI The University of Western Australia 39 Fairway 35 Stirling Highway Nedlands WA 6009 Crawley WA 6009 Ph: +61 8 9380 8120 Fax: +61 8 9380 7254 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------</pre> </body> </html> --------------000606070501070108050100 Content-Type: message/rfc822; name="Your Quokka Advert has Listed!" if I correctly understand the describtion, the problem is caused by the line: >From - Mon Sep 16 22:42:18 2002 which is not stripped out from the original message. I thing we have already fixed that problem. Can you give me the exact build ID of the Mozilla/Netscape you are using. Thanks
I *was* using release 1.0.0.2002053015 Mozilla release 1.1.0.2002082611 I can't reliably get to work at all, so I can't check that the forward bug has been fixed. For the interim I am using Netscape 7.0 [Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.0.1) Gecko/20020823 Netscape/7.0], which admittedly ain't a whole lot better, but doesn't seem to have the same forward bug.
I have also seen the same problem with Netscape Build [Netscape 7.0 Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.0.1) Gecko/20020823 Netscape/7.0], and have included the offending part of the message below: -- Begin Included Message From - Wed Oct 09 15:20:25 2002 X-Mozilla-Status: 0001 X-Mozilla-Status2: 10800000 Message-ID: <3DA3D8B8.8020407@watri.uwa.edu.au> Date: Wed, 09 Oct 2002 15:20:24 +0800 From: Tom Triglone <triglone@watri.uwa.edu.au> User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.0.1) Gecko/20020823 Netscape/7.0 X-Accept-Language: en-us, en MIME-Version: 1.0 To: spam@watri.uwa.edu.au CC: spamcop <submit.mwE2oiuY4AR9GcpC@spam.spamcop.net> Subject: [Fwd: FW: Revenues were 28% HIGHER than CERTIFIED ANALYST forecast for Fiscal 2001] Content-Type: multipart/mixed; boundary="------------040606030709000009040903" This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --------------040606030709000009040903 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit --------------040606030709000009040903 Content-Type: message/rfc822; name="FW: Revenues were 28% HIGHER than CERTIFIED ANALYST forecast for Fiscal 2001" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Content-Disposition: inline; filename="FW: Revenues were 28% HIGHER than CERTIFIED ANALYST forecast for Fiscal 2001" >From - Wed Oct 09 13:46:18 2002
I attempted to reproduce this bug (Mozilla, 1.5 Final) and could not get a message to be interpreted as two messages. I did this by: - turning off format=flowed for sending mail - composing a message to myself into which I pasted the source of another message, including the "From " line - receiving that message, noting that the "From " line had been stuffed with > - forwarding that message to myself, twice, both as an attachment and inline First time, messages arrived in Mozilla, no problem; second time, messages were received in Pine on a Unix shell account, no problem. All received messages arrived as expected, in one piece; the pasted "From " line maintained its ">" prefix thru-out the process. I think the key to this bug is this line from the original report: > Mozilla sometimes sends '>From' at the start of a line of that forwarded > message, which is interpreted by most mail readers as a new message. I don't know whether this statement about "most mail readers" is true, or was true, but it seems to me that any such mail reader is broken -- not Mozilla. I therefore recommend this bug be resolved as Invalid.
Hm. dupe of bug 121946?
