User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:85.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/85.0

Steps to reproduce:

I have an Inbox with sub-folders for every project I work on; same for the Sent folder. Sometimes when a message arrives and I move it to the corresponding sub-folder, a message pops-up asking if I want to save space (bla-bla-bla) with the option to Cancel or Proceed. The first time I saw that message I clicked Proceed, and it ended up wiping out the content of the entire destination sub-folder.

Actual results:

It wiped out the content of the entire destination sub-folder.

Expected results:

It should only move the email message to the destination sub-folder.

What you are referring to is the compact prompt. But losing a folder, even in that situation, is often caused by antivirus software

Summary: Unintended erasing of email messages. → Unintended erasing of email messages during compact

Another thing that compact is known to do is damage the folder view, meaning the folder contents are still there, but if you restart or repair the folder the contents are still there. Definitely scary, but the data is still there.

Oliver,
What have you learned since your initial report? Who is your mail provider? And have you seen the problem since?
