User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:86.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/86.0

Steps to reproduce:

While Thunderbird is running and minimized, there is no indication that the program is still running. In win10, minimized programs show an underline in the program tray. Thunderbird when minimized does not show the underline, and appears to not be running at all. When the icon is clicked, the program returns as it should.

Expected results:

Program should show an underline (windows 10) when minimized.

How is your Windows 10 Taskbar configured?

I have "Use small taskbar icons" on and "Combine taskbar buttons" set to "Always, hide labels", and the Thunderbird icon on the taskbar is underlined. All of the open minimized applications are underlined.

I prefer the setting "When taskbar is full" so I don't have to go searching for the Thunderbird compose window when composing an email. I also see the underline with that option.

If I enable "When Thunderbird is minimized, move it to the tray" in Thunderbird's options, the Thunderbird icon is not underlined in the system tray.

So your problem with the icon is with minimizing it to the tray?

Yes, the problem is with the Thunderbird icon not being underlined when minimized to the tray.
The icon is underlined when the Thunderbird program is open.
Thunderbird Icon is pinned to taskbar and in start menu
=== Taskbar settings ===
The tray is configured to show all icons
Taskbar lock = ON
Small taskbar buttons = ON
Use peek = ON
Place Command prompt with Windows Power Shell = ON
Located at bottom
Taskbar only on one display only (I am using two displays on a laptop PC)
Taskbar background is Black

Thanks!

I'm going to change this to an enhancement request since users that minimize to the tray should know that the application is minimized.

I don't see it as a defect.

Type: defect → enhancement
Component: Untriaged → OS Integration
OS: Unspecified → Windows 10
Hardware: Unspecified → x86_64
Summary: No minimized indicator when running (windows 10 uses an under-line) → Add minimized indicator underline when running Thunderbird minimized to tray (windows 10 uses an under-line in the Taskbar)

Sometimes we forget.
Sometimes we are unsure if we hit the "-" or the "X" when clearing the desktop to run, yet again, another program.
Thanks,
Pixel

I would like to add my 2 cents worth here -- All of my Windows10 apps have the underline in the system tray when they're running minimized, even my 199? version of Eudora. The only exception is Thunderbird.

It could become a problem when I have to shut the computer down quickly, usually because of a thunderstorm, and a quick glance at the system tray doesn't show any active apps so I shut down. So far nothing in TB has been trashed because of this, but I've done it a couple of times.

If Eudora could do it, you'd think it would be no problem for TB.

Thanks.
