RESOLVED DUPLICATE of bug 1585912

People

(Reporter: aleks.stier, Unassigned)

Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:86.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/86.0

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open firefox
  2. Focus urlbar by clicking in it
  3. Unfocus urlbar by clicking somewhere else

Actual results:

When the urlbar gets focused it becomes big.
If it loses focus it becomes small again.

Expected results:

Urlbar should always be small. At least there should be an option to disable the huge urlbar.

All solutions I found on the internet don't work or are really hacky, cumbersome or break something.

There are a lot of people who really don't like this big urlbar. Its distracting and ugly and has zero benefits.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Address Bar' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please revert this change in case you think the bot is wrong.

Component: Untriaged → Address Bar

While we won't be adding a toggle, the large Urlbar is effectively being removed in the upcoming Proton redesign. See bug 1678744 for that work.

You are free to use custom CSS if you do not like the huge URL bar: https://github.com/WesleyBranton/Remove-Firefox-Megabar.

I personally love the new Proton UI. It's clean, the animations are smooth, the corners are rounded, and it integrates well in Linux, and it keeps on getting better.

Anyway, I'm sorry to break it to you, Chromium, Chrome, ungoogled-chromium, Edge and Brave implement a big URL bar when in focus as well, so you don't have much choice when switching browsers.

Please note, I am using Chrome, and it doesn't expand. I switched to chrome after 20+ years of using Netscape (Motif!) -> Mozilla (Bloated) -> Firefox because of the "Mega" URL Bar. We've been on chrome for over a year, after the cut over.

@TheEvilSkeleton The current Firefox-UI is also clean, has smooth animations, has no rounded corners (which is better), integrates well with Linux and keeps getting better without the Proton UI. None of your points (except rounded corners which is personal preference) adds anything what the current UI isn't able to do. So far I see nothing what Proton UI does better. If anything it makes things worse.
