After installation of latest build, a new mail or news account MUST be defined - but crashes

I installed Build ID 2002091908 right now (over my last standard installation of
Mozilla 1.2 a in 'C:\Programme\mozilla.org') and had to reboot.
After that, the mail & newsgroup window opened as it should.
But I could not access my mails as a Mail/News Account Manager opens and asks me
to create a new profile (although Mozilla has launched my standard profile with
5 e-mail and 3 news accounts already).
I cannot enter a new pseudo account - Mozilla crashes.
I cannot even cancel the Manager, clicks on the 'Cancel' buttons are not accepted.
I will have to get back to release 1.2 a instead. :-(

a) Please uninstall the old build first and not over an older build.
b) Do you use a thrid-party Theme ?
(if yes: switch to classic/modern and after that install the nightly)

a) WHY? I did never ever uninstall a software before updating it.
This worked fine for Mozilla ever since.
b) I use the Classic Theme.
I re-installed Mozilla 1.2a and did not see ANY icons any longer. After a system
reset I over-installed Mozilla 1.0 but did not find my profiles any longer. Then
I re-installed 1.2a again (ID 2002091014) and everything works fine again.

Don't install over an old build. Release notes : "Install into a new empty
directory. Installing on top of previously installed builds may cause problems."
Since there are so many files in the Mozilla-directories, and because there are
so many different versions of Mozilla, it's very difficult to build an installer
which knows how to install over an older build (removing files, renaming,
upgrading ...). And you wanted to go from 1.0 --> 1.2 --> 1.0 --> 1.2 *without*
problems ?

I'm suprised this is dismissed so quickly.
I'm seeing a similar problem with IMAP folders (crashing the browser), showing
in 0918/0919/0920, but I was able to install 0912 which does not seem to have
the problem.
And yes, in all cases I was installing into an existing folder ... This seems to
indicate some IMAP problems sneaking (back?) into the code lately.
