This doesn't appear to be a recent regression; when I tried to go back earlier than 2018, I could not log into gmail (crashes, "service issues", etc). It doesn't happen with Chrome, or with Firefox in other rich editors, e.g:

https://ckeditor.com/ckeditor-4/demo/
https://htmlg.com/html-editor/

Possibly a webcompat issue instead?

I've ended up with the following regression range:

Has Regression Range: --- → yes
Has STR: --- → yes
Flags: needinfo?(dschubert)

Unfortunately, I can't reproduce this anymore, even with the regression-window-builds mentioned in comment 3. I assume this was something on Google's side, and was fixed by now.

If you can still reproduce, please let me know and we can dig deeper.
