OS Environment is Ubuntu linux 20.04 (up to date as of now - so don't tell me to update Thunderbird to version X.Y.Z plz, unless you publish deb repo ?)
Thunderbird : 78.7.1 (64-bit)

Is your profile on a file share?

perhaps related:

• Bug 1612414 - after update to TB 68.4.2 from 60.9.1 on mac OS 10.15.2, profiles located on nas will not open (smb mounted profile)
• Bug 1684771 - Cannot send emails - Receipients cannot be entered (on 78, but works in 85.0 beta2)
• Bug 1665483 - I can not send email since the update of 14th September 2020 [involving portableApps, NS_ERROR_STORAGE_IOERR: AddrBookDirectory.jsm:78]

Hi Wayne, thanks for having a look ;o)

No my profile is stored locally, I guess in the .config folder in my home.

ADDITIONAL NOTES :

1. I updated Thunderbird using apt and I'm now using package 91.4.0+build2-0ubuntu0.20.04.1 from mozilla PPA, and I'm still experiencing the issue.
2. I'm running a heavily tuned Lubuntu 12.x or 14.x (can't remember, this was a long time ago...) using enlightenment as desktop (from bodhi linux repos). As you may see from pkg version it is currently in "focal" release thanks to successive updates along all those years.

rastataz, can you still reproduce on a newer version?

FWIW, https://mzl.la/48bN2IZ lists two bugs matching the error reported here, which have both been closed invalid:

• Bug 1665483 - I can not send email since the update of 14th September 2020 [involving portableApps, NS_ERROR_STORAGE_IOERR: AddrBookDirectory.jsm:78]
• Bug 2000779 - Address Books are not accesed at all if the profile is on a smb network share - when samba "Strict logging" is set to "Auto" - smb/permissions related
