Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64; rv:87.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/87.0

Steps to reproduce:

  • I click on a link that downloads a zip archive
  • FF informs me (with a red spot next to the download arrow) that there is very dangerous stuff in that archive: "This file contains a virus or malware" (which is not true, btw)
  • I click nonetheless, and FF informs me a second time that "This file contains a virus or malware"
  • my fingers are aching now from all the clicking, but nonetheless I click once on "Open"

Actual results:

  • Firefox launches TWICE my zip archiver (7-zip in this case)

Expected results:

  • Firefox should have launched my zip archiver only ONCE

Btw it would be incredibly helpful if there was an option "don't check archives from http://myutterlydangerousprogrammingsite.com ;-)

Hello,

I attempted to reproduce the issue on the latest Nightly (90.0a1/20210419221626), Beta (89.0b1/20210419195043) and Release (88.0/20210415204500) under Windows 10 x64, however without success.
I attempted to download an archive (which I know is detected as a virus or malware) from https://official-kmspico.org/. On the window where the archive can be saved or opened after I clicked the download button from the above page, I tried both to save the file and in another attempt to directly open it.
In both cases, Firefox informs me that the file might contain a virus or malware and:

  1. in the case of having selected the Save option, the file is downloaded but cannot be opened directly from the browser (I have to go to the download destination folder and open it manually). There are no available options of what to do with the file within the browser.
  2. in the case of having selected the Open option, Firefox downloads the archive but does not open it.

Tested with Release 87.0 as well and the same behavior as above is exhibited.

Hello Alex,

Interesting, thanks for testing this.

I tried right now to download the archive at https://official-kmspico.org/ - no problem, no red point, it just opens fine, and only once.

Then I tried downloading the attachment at http://masm32.com/board/index.php?topic=9316.0 - red point and warnings (despite the attachment being harmless and clean), and clicking "Open" results in TWO open 7-zip dialogs. This is Windows 7-64, FF 87.0 (64-bit).

A new case: The attachment to the post at http://masm32.com/board/index.php?topic=9327.0 "contains a virus or malware". PLEASE download it, and open it in Notepad. It won't bite you because it is a plain text file. I have no idea what kind of virus scanners Firefox uses, but this is becoming a little bit ridiculous, sorry.

More related to the bug reported: When I open the "dangerous" archive the first time, ignoring the warnings, it opens twice in 7-Zip. Subsequent openings (without warnings) produce only one dialog.

Hi jj

I tried to replicate this using firefox release 94.0.1 on windows 10 64bit,
i went to http://masm32.com/board/index.php?topic=9327.0
downloaded the zip file and tested the 2 options and i had no virus warning

Can you please let me know if you still have this issue after updating firefox to the latest release version 94.0.1?
or perhaps you might want to try the lates firefox nightly version of firefox?
Here is a link from where you can download it: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/channel/desktop/

Regards.
