Details
(Whiteboard: [proton-infobars] [priority:2b] [fidefe-Quality-Foundation])
With Proton set to on screen reader adds "edit" before the "first button" and "alt+random letter" before each of the other buttons available on the infobar (including the close "X" button), with Proton set to off it does not read the main string at all it only reads the buttons but adds "alt+random letter" before each available button.
The role="alert" was introduced by Bug 1703172
The behaviours are different on other OS'es see Comment 4 in Bug 1703172

Peter,
What screen reader user are you using? Can you give me specific steps to reproduce?

This was reproduced with Windows Narrator (bug 1703172 comment 4). While this isn't ideal, given that Firefox currently doesn't work well with Narrator in several other areas, I'd suggest this should not block the feature, especially because with Proton disabled the behaviour is actually worse.

The issue, as James stated, occurs with Windows Narrator.
The steps are the same as with the Mac and Linux voice-over issues I've logged (Bug 1707188 Comment 2)
