RESOLVED DUPLICATE of bug 1621570

People

(Reporter: horvath, Unassigned)

Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:78.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/78.0

Steps to reproduce:

When I click on the URL bar, I want to edit, not select. Please make it possible (sic, default is an other question) again (on all platform, to be consistent). So, this is not a duplication of the (silenced) Bug 1621570, but this is a new feature request. If you decide to ignore this desire (of many users, actually), please justify it conceptually. (However, if you interpret it as a duplication of the bug about the removal, then justify both conceptually and technically, please.)

Actual results:

Firefox selects the entire URL bar anyway (ignoring my cursor position), no (easy) way to change this behavior.

Expected results:

There should be an option to change this behavior, and make it possible to just edit immediately. Either by restoring the old preferences (browser.urlbar.clickSelectsAll) or adding new ones.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Preferences' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please revert this change in case you think the bot is wrong.

Component: Untriaged → Preferences

All the discussion and reasoning is publicly readable there in bug 1621570. At this time we have no news about this matter.

Odds are that this will never get fixed, since one dev is virulently opposed to it, but our best chance seems to be if you go to the original bug report and vote for it. Votes are hidden by default, of course, so you have to click to expand Details first.

Okay. So for example, you are on this wikipedia page:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teinosuke_Kinugasa

You want to search for 'Teinosuke Kinugasa Chōjirō Hayashi' (just some non-trivial texts in English) on the net.

  1. Select Teinosuke Kinugasa in the text, copy it
  2. Move the url bar, and paste
  3. Select Chōjirō Hayashi, copy it
  4. Move to the url bar (or click to the end of text), press space, paste
  5. Oops

There are several use cases like this, including all kinds of url modifications.
