User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:88.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/88.0

Steps to reproduce:

Configure Thunderbird Interface in French (fr), with TB sized on half screen
Configuration: Ubuntu 21.04 (fr-FR interface) and TB 78.8.1 (I have this problem since Ubuntu 20.10).

Actual results:

Long lines in received messages (text or HTML) doesn't wrap correctly (see the screen capture). This problem doesn't appear with en-US interface.

Hello Giles, thank you for your well-documented bug report.
I consider this a usability bug which should be fixed.

This is easily reproducable on release 78.10.1 and Daily 90.0a1 (2021-05-03).
Everyday scenario e.g. when two applications are sharing one screen horizontally side by side.
It's not limited to French localization, but French makes it much worse with longer button labels.
Your personal addons are also making it worse as they have added two extra buttons.

STR:

  1. View a message with a bit more of running text (lore ipsum...).
  2. Reduce Thunderbird window width until all header buttons are just still visible (attachment 9220286 [details] is almost there) by dragging right window border to the left, and watch msg body text re-wrap accordingly.
  3. Now reduce TB window width even more and watch right side of buttons, vertical msg body scrollbar and right side of text disappear.

The reason is that the buttons on message header do not wrap if the horizontal space available is no longer enough to show them all. The header will not shrink to less than the total width of all buttons, and in turn the message body will no longer shrink either, but instead be cut-off on the right. If you have a longer running text, you can easily observe this when dragging right window border slowly to the left from "buttons-just-fit" window width - in the same moment when you see message body's vertical toolbar disappear, the message body display will also start to disappear on the right.

Severity: -- → S3
Status: UNCONFIRMED → NEW
Component: Untriaged → Message Reader UI
Ever confirmed: true
Summary: long lines doesn't wrap correctly for received messages with French interface → Message header buttons won't wrap or iconize if Thunderbird window has less width than needed to display them all, causing message body display truncation on the right

And it's actually already on record as bug 1669063...
