User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:88.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/88.0
Steps to reproduce:
The steps to reproduce are mentioned in the video which I have attached alongside.
Actual results:
Whenever I try to open 'Application Menu' or 'View History, Saved bookmarks.......' there is a delay that's causing huge problems. As you can see in the video, when I use the drop down list of more bookmarks, it is smooth but this is not the case with other drop down lists. I have tried everything to resolve this, refreshed my Firefox from help section, delete my cache, deleted my history, reinstalled, everything.
Expected results:
There should have been no delay and cursor should move smoothly on drop down list. My PC specs are good and this did not happen earlier.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Bookmarks & History' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please revert this change in case you think the bot is wrong.

Yeah I refreshed page while submitting, I think that resulted in duplicate requests.
Hi jackhammervyom,
I tested this issue on Windows 10 and Ubuntu, on Firefox Nightly 90.0a1 (2021-05-07) (64-bit), and Release 88.0.1 (64-bit), but I was unable to reproduce this issue on my end.
Since this looks more like a bug, instead of an Enhancement, I change the Type status to Defect.
Could you answer the following questions in order to further investigate this issue?
-
Does this issue occur in the latest nightly version of firefox? Here is a link from where you can download it: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/channel/desktop/
-
Are you using any addons? If so, please list them.
-
You can provide us your profile performance data via profile recorder. Refer to following link to know how you can capture profile performance https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Performance/Reporting_a_Performance_Problem It could be helpful. Please, also note that this add-on works only on FF Nightly, so that means you need to be able to reproduce the issue on Nightly first.
If you are still able to reproduce it, please, share further information with us, like more specific steps.
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Jerónimo.

Hi Jerónimo,
I followed the instructions you gave and have come up with the following results-
- I installed FF nightly, I did not add any add-ons because the issue was there with the fresh installation too. I was on welcome screen and I checked and the issue was still there.
- My performance profile data https://share.firefox.dev/3uyCQnm
- I don't think add-ons are a problem here as the problem was there with a fresh installation of nightly too but I will provide the list of add-ons too.
- Cisco Webex Extension
- Stay secure with CyberGhost VPN free proxy.
- I am attaching a new file also, sharing the screen recording on ff nightly.

Is this a regression compared to the previous versions of Firefox?
Could you please post a log from the about:support page?
This seems to affect all the menus, in particular the hamburger menu, thus it's not specific to bookmarks.
There is a profile in comment 5, but I cannot read the graphics part of it.
Florian, could you please have a look at this profile? I suspect graphics may be involved.

The renderer thread is blocked for periods of 1s (each Composite marker takes about 1s) : https://share.firefox.dev/3vkhY3V
Robert, I've been told you are the right person to needinfo for a Linux graphics issue like this, but feel free to forward the needinfo.

Hm, these kind of 1s hiccups are expected in certain non-default setups, specificly when running hardware Webrender on Xwayland (especially on slightly older versions of Xwayland). Webrender should be disabled in these setups on the release channel, while nightly enables them unconditionally.
jackhammervyom, mind sharing the content of you about:support
so we know exactly what we're dealing here? And can you check if setting gfx.webrender.software:true
in about:config
works around the issue?

I checked this morning and this issue WAS NOT THERE for some reason, I suspect that I haven't used ff for a few days so that might have something to do with it but still I shared by about:support, please take a look whether everything is fine or not, any fine tuning settings you can recommend, I will push ff to limits and will test whether this issue reappears, gfx.webrender.software
was set to false
, I set it to true

From the comments, either gtk/widget (for wayland) or webrender seems like a more appropriate component, so moving this bug along for triage there.

Do you remember if you captured that about:support when you were experiencing the issue?

Unfortunately no, I was not aware about that at the time of reporting.
