Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.14; rv:88.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/88.0

Steps to reproduce:

  1. E-ink screens are a common recommendation for people with migraines, post-concussion syndrome, or anything else which can involve light, flash, flicker, or visual motion sensitivities.

  2. They are still a lot smaller and more expensive than e-ink screens. Dedicated e-ink monitors range from about 10.3" to 13.3". Hybrid tablets which can be used as monitors range up to 13.3."

2a. To navigate Thunderbird on a 10.1" screen, I have to show the Folder Pane, and to read messages, I have to hide it.

  1. They are usually grayscale displays, so they don't show distinctions by color. They may not show much distinction between regular and bold text either.

  2. They hay have trouble tracking moving mice, with a noticeable lag and/or with screen refresh behind the cursor. Many but not all support touch controls instead. But I think they make keyboard control more important.

Expected results:

I think 3 main things should help:

  1. Making sure Thunderbird works well on small screens.

  2. Making sure it works well on monochrome screens.

  3. Making sure as much as possible can use the keyboard without using the mouse, and allowing users to create more keyboard shortcuts.

See also bug 1677118 about keyboard shortcuts.

Under #2, I meant "... smaller and more expensive than conventional lcd and led screens."
