This is a feature. Middle clicking non-link on non-form widget loads the URL
from the clipboard. This is analoguos to URL drag&drop onto the content area on Mac.

Ahhhh, I understand now, and feel rarther foolish.
If anyone still feels this is a bug maybe they should look at bug 70498
They may also want to consider adding the following preference to
their user.js file:
"middlemouse.contentLoadURL"
Maybe consider making this a duplicate of bug 70498, instead of marking it as
invlaid?
A search for the string "middlemouse.contentLoadURL" in bugzilla also turns up a
nice list of interesting bugs.
of related bugs.
