User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.15; rv:89.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/89.0
Steps to reproduce:
Just open a new tab (set to show 4 rows of shortcuts using Personalizations, although the problem also occurs with any number of rows and regardless of whether or not sponsored shortcuts are enabled). For shortcuts where a stylized letter (e.g. O for onedrive or D for google drive) was shown instead of the favicon, I clicked on the icon to load the website.
Actual results:
Some of the shortcuts (e.g. Amazon, eBay, Gmail, Archlinux, Github, Youtube, Wikipedia) have their correct favicons displayed where they should be (see screenshot). However, others (e.g. Google Docs/Sheets/Forms, OneDrive, Zoom, Void Linux, Oh My ZSH) had just the placeholder letter rather than a favicon showing up (also visible in screenshot). The correct favicon showed up on the tab of the website when it was opened, but when I open another New Tab there still is no favicon loaded.
Expected results:
All of the shortcuts should have the correct favicons displayed. If the favicon for a website was not stored in cache, upon opening the website and saving that favicon and reopening another New Tab, favicons for that website should have been displayed.

I was unable to reproduce the issue you've reported in the latest Fx 89.0 using MacOS 11 and MacOs 10.15. Note: After I bookmarked few sites from your screenshot the correct favicon is showing up on new tab.
Please test if the issue occurs in troubleshoot mode. Here is a link that can help you do that:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/diagnose-firefox-issues-using-troubleshoot-mode?redirectslug=troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode&redirectlocale=en-US#w_how-to-start-firefox-in-9troubleshoot-modesf10safe-modesf
If the issue still persists, please test it using a new profile, you can find the steps to do that below:

Thank you so much for the prompt response!! Interesting, I tried using a new profile and it's working as expected — after I browse a bit and a website or two that I visited gets added to shortcuts, the favicon is displayed there immediately. Issue didn't go away in troubleshoot mode though. Maybe it's a problem in my profile?? I'm having this issue on both macOS 11 and Arch Linux though, and I have different profiles for each OS so I'm not sure what's wrong... again, it does work in the new profile though — I might just make a new profile and transfer my information there in that case.

Cannot reproduce this and given the age and possibly down to a profile issue, closing WFM, please reopen / file a new bug if there is a more concrete issue, cheers
