I cannot reproduce this issue after the update from Fx 88.0.1 to Fx 89.0 with Firefox Alpenglow theme using a desktop Win 10.
Can you please tell me which one of the theme did you used? Or how did you set your background colors?
Please try to change your background colors using a new profile, you can find the steps to do that below:

I was unable to correct reported issue, so I deleted and reloaded Mozilla/Firefox (M/F). This seems to have corrected the issue, except that the non selected open tabs across the top of the M/F page are now "gray" not black as in the version before June 1. Can you detail how I can change the non-opened tabs back to a black background?

Hello,
If you want to change the background to black then go to the hamburger menu (main menu button), select Add-ons and Themes, go to the Themes section and select that theme that you want(another than System Theme). If this is not helpful please send us more information and a screenshot with before and after.
Thank you!

As per reporters' comment, fixed by a reinstall.
