Steps to reproduce:

Today after upgrading to 89.0 version, after certain time of usage my browser becomes frozen and doesn't respond to any click, it happened 5 times today, task manager shows no memory leak, the only solution is to kill it. This never happened with previous version which I used almost everyday without problems.

That indeed sounds pretty bad - you should be able to work around the issue by going to about:config and setting gfx.webrender.force-disabled to true until we figured out what's happening.

Running "kwin_x11 --replace &" does nothing, Firefox remains totally frozen.
I tried to restrict the range of source problems and run many tests, so what I found is that Firefox becomes frozen in most cases when videos are playing on Facebook or Reddit or any other site with videos then you start scrolling or jumping from tab to another, it does not happen in a fixed scenario but randomly. And it can also happen also on websites without any videos.

I'm following this bug, too. Since v89 it's hanging a few times a day, which is super annoying. Using KDE on Debian Bullseye. The kwin_x11 --replace-trick didn't work out for me, too. I have to kill and restart.

Any idea what to do and how to offer more information? I can't use the browser this way.

It's usually freezing during video meetings or video playback, but maybe just because this causes high load on the browser?

Hi Otto, first of all could you please go to about:support, click "copy text to clipboard", and attach the text to this bug. Then could try setting gfx.webrender.software.opengl to true in about:config, restart firefox, and see if that helps. Please let us know whether it does or doesn't.

If that does not help, then please set gfx.webrender.force-disabled to true, restart, and that should solve the issue while we figure out what the cause is.

I'm also getting this issue since the aforementioned Firefox version. Disabling hardware acceleration helps. Setting gfx.webrender.software.opengl to true does not help (HW accel. on). Setting gfx.webrender.force-disabled to false helps (HW accel. on). I'm only able to trigger this issue on my desktop PC. Laptop still uses Windows 7 and seems unaffected.

I was able to figure out a reliable way to make it hang on my system:

1. Open 'https://www.bitstamp.net/market/tradeview/'. This opens a page with a TradeView element. It's not just TradeView that makes Firefox freeze but I found this key into triggering it sooner.
2. Open a second tab with any other website.
3. Maximize the Firefox window. I found that the smaller the window, the less likely it freezes.
4. Constantly switch between the tabs manually with your mouse (ctrl+tab does not work), but while on the TradeView page, hover your mouse over the TradeView element first before switching again. Do this until Firefox freezes. Can take anywhere from 1 switch up to 30; it's pretty random but a freeze is guaranteed if your environment is affected.

I also don't really understand how this profiler is supposed to work. Just launching it during normal operation makes Firefox laggy (not frozen as in the issue, but immediately slow so I have to wait about 10 seconds after every input until I see a tab change, scroll etc). So this doesn't work to reproduce the issue, since normal operation until it's frozen is not really possible.
When the freeze happens, I tried using ctrl + shift + 1, but I don't know if anything useful happened.

I noticed in comment #3 that OMTP (Off Main Thread Painting) is blocked on <= 2 cores, this video in comment #37 looks plausibly like a threading issue with painting to me as well.

I don't have hardware suitable to reproduce this naturally (OpenGL 2, 2 CPU cores or less) but I can try experimenting with turning off OMTP and see if I can reproduce it. Does this issue still occur on newer versions than 106.0.1?

Correction - I'm not sure OMTP is still a thing with WebRender being forced on everywhere (it has software fallbacks automatically).

NeedInfo - svv - in comment #38 you demonstrate that it will unfreeze momentarily when you adjust the volume using volume keys, could you use Firefox profiler and use the volume keys trick to unfreeze it so you may be able to submit the profile so we can look at it? It would be invaluable to know where in the code it is frozen :)

Using mozregression to find the exact code change that broke it would also be really valuable. https://mozilla.github.io/mozregression/install.html has information on how to install the commandline version of this tool on Linux using the python 'pip' command, running mozregression with no options will attempt to find broken and working versions and have you attempt to reproduce the issue on each one - after several attempts it will be able to identify the exact code change responsible.

original bug (comments 0 - 32, 2 years ago) might have been bug 1717089 -> bug 1708224.
comment 34 - comment 38 might have been bug 1781167 (introduced in 102 which matches comment 34, fixed in 108, 109, esr102.6).
In December 2022, Manjaro (Arch Linux fork) might have been additionally affected by bug 1801820.
Offtopic (different STR), but KDE is likely still affected by bug 1796960 (since 105).

I think it's possible to deliberately crash firefox when it is frozen and we can then see the place it is stuck. From gfx-triage meeting we have a theory that this may be a SW-WR vsync issue where the browser thinks it is waiting for the next display refresh but that event never comes, so it wakes up only when the OS asks it to repaint (because of the volume control UI showing up over the window).

Can you run firefox on terminal with MOZ_LOG="nsRefreshDriver:5" env variable? If it's caused by refresh driver you should see stream of

"Hit max pending transaction limit, entering wait mode"

entries which means compositor is blocked.
