User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:89.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/89.0

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open Thunderbird in an account, where there are multiple folders
  2. Select a folder nested in the Inbox folder.
  3. Have an email received in that folder on the server but not in TB yet. (You may need server-side filters set up so that the message is automatically moved to the folder upon receipt; the new message does not appear in the Inbox.)
  4. Click "Get All New Messages" in the "Get Messages" drop down list.

Actual results:

The new message does not appear in Thunderbird. It only appears if you click to a different folder and then back to the original folder.

Expected results:

The new message should appear.

There is the mail.server.default.check_all_folders_for_new config option that is not enabled by default. If you do enable it, the message does appear, as desired. This bug requests to make that option enabled by default. The rationale is that when the user clicks "Get All New Messages", he means exactly that - that all new messages should be fetched, in all folders, not just Inbox. Furthermore, "Get Messages" acts on the current email account, but otherwise it should also fetch all messages in all folders, rather than just Inbox.

I don't think we want to do that. There are users who have 1000s of folders... the performance implications both on client and server would not be nice.

My point is that without that option enabled fetching new messages doesn't work for folders. This is a correctness vs. performance issue, and correctness must have higher priority. At least, expose that option in the settings, so that users with lots of folders can choose the behavior they want.
