User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:88.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/88.0
Steps to reproduce:
Firefox auto updated to 89.0 which is unusable.
Actual results:
I reinstalled firefox 88.0.1 however it throws a dialog box up that the profile has been corrupted by the upgrade and does not offer to restore from backup or to just continue.
Expected results:
- Not default to auto update on fresh install. Users should be requested to choose for that.
- The profile should not have been corrupted.
- The dialog box should offer to restore from backup taken before the update occurred.
- A third option of "I understand the risks" could have been provided so potentially some of the profile could be salvaged instead of complete lossage.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Toolkit::Application Update' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please revert this change in case you think the bot is wrong.

Hello, thanks for filing a bug. I'm really sorry that it took so long for someone to get around to looking at it!

To be clear, it says that the profile could be corrupted by being loaded by an older version of Firefox, not that the profile has already been corrupted.

Sorry, but we are not going to make that change. The internet is sort of a hostile place where users encounter untrusted/malicious code on a regular basis. The best way for users to be protected against that is to keep their browsers up-to-date. For most users, this means that they should be updated automatically. For more advanced users, it may be desirable to update in some other way. But we have to set our defaults for the "average user", not for advanced users.
The remaining points here seem more applicable to the Profile system than to application update, so I'm going to move this bug to that component so that they can take a look.

This is the intentional behaviour.
