Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.14; rv:56.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/56.0 Waterfox/56.5

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Slip. Accidentally start update.

  2. Emergency quit.

  3. Reopen Firefox.

Actual results:

  1. Which resumes the accursed update.

  2. Reinstall from previous version.

  3. Get "downgrade protection".

  4. Track down command-line options to avoid "downgrade protection".

Expected results:

Just let people stop the damned updates. Especially when there are plans to push new migraine triggers and/or remove about:config options which would let users avoid the migraine triggers.

Bug occured on Firefox 88, but I haven't fixed it yet.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Toolkit::Application Update' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please revert this change in case you think the bot is wrong.

Hi marjaE

This sound more like an enhancement that you want.

Once you go to Hamburger menu>Help>About it triggers the update download automatically.
Sometimes its just a few megs that get downloaded in 2 seconds.

So you want a way to choose with a button to cancel the download/update?

regards.
Pablo

I am pretty sure that all the features that you are asking for already exist.

If you don't want updates to be installed automatically, you can go to the Update section of about:preferences and choose "Check for updates, but let you choose to install them". If an update is in-progress, you should be given the option to cancel it.

If you want no updates of any kind, you can enable the DisableAppUpdate Enterprise Policy before you first launch Firefox. This will prevent it from ever even checking for updates.

If I have misunderstood, and these do not address your issue, let me know and we can reopen the bug.

I couldn't find any option to cancel it. I emergency quit, it resumed on restart, and it updated without asking.

Yes. And one that can be found before it's too late.
