Steps to reproduce:

I updated to firefox 89 (with new proton user interface) using the apt repository, later I launched the web browser normally

Actual results:

The web browser firefox 89 with on new "Proton user interface" and hardware acceleration enabled cannot run (crash) on linux mint mate version 20x using window manager set to (Marco + Compositing)

Expected results:

Please, fix the issue to continue using firefox normally

Does firefox work correctly in a different window manager?

When you say "hardware acceleration enabled", what do you mean? Have you modified preferences in about:config to enable hardware acceleration?

Are you able to run it with a fresh profile and see if that works correctly? (If you launch firefox with firefox -P it will give you the option to create a fresh profile first)

Are you able to go to about:support and click the "Copy text to clipboard" button, and attach the text to this bug? I understand this may be tricky if firefox is not working correctly.

Yes works but, my graphics adapter do not have well acceleration using others window manager and showing screen tearing on scroll down or see videos. Before update Firefox using the quantum user interface, the setup worked fine
The gpu chip is (Intel Haswell-ULT Integrated Graphics Renderer: Mesa DRI Intel HD Graphics 4400 (HSW GT2) v: 4.5 Mesa 20.2.6 compat-v: 3.0 direct render: Yes )

Yes, I found that using my current settings it still works but disabling browser hardware acceleration
The steps are: Apply other Window Manager option, change hardware acceleration settings into web browser, and return the Window Manager (marco + compositing), launch Firefox 89

On version 88, only GNOME, XFCE, and KDE users were given webrender, but on 89 we expanded that to all desktop environents, which is why this problem started with 89.

Yes, the OpenGL with (marco + compositing) works fine, I tested window maximized, restored, move the window around the desktop without any problem

So in summary, in the previous version of Firefox hardware acceleration was disabled by default. After updating hardware acceleration got enabled, and it no longer renders correctly in the marco + compositing window manager. Disabling hardware acceleration (falling back to software webrender) fixes the issue.

It might be worthwhile raising this issue with the marco window manager, as hardware accelerated firefox works correctly in other window managers.

In the meantime, you should probably leave hardware acceleration disabled when using that window manager.

There's nothing specific I'm aware of - but I agree that it's likely that there's a Marco bug.

  • do things work better on beta/nightly? (I'm thinking of bug 1696905 which helped avoiding glitches in some other setups)
  • which Xorg driver do you use? You can check with xrandr --listproviders - if it's not modesetting, but e.g. the classic intel driver, please try switching to modesetting
  • does running with MOZ_X11_EGL=1 make any difference?

looks like you're still running the classic intel driver. It should say name:modesetting at the end. It's already good to know that you're not running the modesetting driver - it would be great to know if it works as expected when switching to it.

I have found the root of the problem and its solution

  1. I use an HP EliteBook G1, Intel i5 i5-4300U (With Haswell-ULT Integrated Graphics Controller GPU)

  2. I installed lunux mint 20.2 with the Intel screen tearing setting (to correct a problem when displaying graphics)

By not specifying the option (Option "AccelMethod") it defaults to the acceleration "sna"

The "sna" acceleration works well until Firefox 88, with version 89 and the new graphical interface starts the problem

I added the (Option "AccelMethod" "uxa") section as follows:

Thanks! I'll take that as another point for "blocklist classic DDX driver" for HW-WR. Most distros/users nowadays use the modesetting driver while the classic Intel DDX driver has a combinatory explosion of settings that can break HW-WR.

Just for the record: AFAIK "TearFree" is essentially "put a compositor into the driver", essentially combining the drawbacks from both worlds, composited and uncomposited environments. It has the overhead of compositing while not offering the benefits like alpha channels etc. In other words, it's a hacky solution for legacy WMs and from technically point of view really, really legacy technology.

I found that the acceleration by (Option "AccelMethod" "uxa") on my laptop (HP EliteBook G1, Intel i5 i5-4300U) has an issue when it comes back from sleep that the screen is black and only shows the mouse pointer

How did I solve it?
I changed the parameters by activating DRI3 and now it works much better as when it was in (Option "AccelMethod" "sna") by default

Note: Just specify these options in the file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf"
