Steps to reproduce:
Send a mail message. Return to my inbox folder and try to navigate.
Actual results:
Thunderbird stall showing non responding for several seconds or more. This only happens if I have set "when sending messages automatically place a copy in my inbox."
Expected results:
not hang.
note that I do not have check for new messages selected but depend on notifications. this is a gmail account. Also note that this occurs in both the released version and in 90.0b2.

I use that setting, and have no difficulty.
What is the size of Inbox.msf?
And does this problem happen with Windows and Thunderbird started in safe mode?

Your comments prodded me to repair my inbox - which seems to have fixed this issue. Someone with the rights can close this as worksforme. Sorry for noise.
