User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:89.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/89.0
Steps to reproduce:
Have a message received including the PDF attachment.
Double click to open the PDF attachment in a new tab.
Go back to the email message and try to open the same PDF in another tab by double clicking again.
Actual results:
The additional tab with secondary instance of the PDF viewer shows a completely blank window (only PDF.js viewer caption).
Expected results:
It should open as many tab instances with the PDF content as user intends to open the same attachment, or may bring the user to the previously open tab (primary) with that given PDF attachment.

Using 91.0b5 on Fedora Linux, single clicking on the attachment opens it in a new tab.
Going back to the same email and single clicking the attachment takes me back to the original tab, but it is blank.

Bug still exists on version 91.3.2
That is expected since the bug hasn't been confirmed.
No need to report it with every new version.
What is the purpose of opening the same PDF attachment twice?

There may be various reasons to open either intentionally or unintentionally again the same attachment. Anyway, the behavior is wrong, it is an obvious bug and should be corrected. This used to work correctly and as expeced in earlier versions.

The earlier versions of Thunderbird did not have the PDF Viewer which opens the PDF in a tab like they do in Firefox.
Try changing the association to use your PDF application.
That works for me.

Yeah, you are possibly right, I have seen it in Firefox perhaps. Anyway, I assume the behavior should be still easily rectified as per expected results.

If there is any fix, it should probably be in the viewer code.

Managed to reproduce this on Windows 10 x64, macOS 11.6 and on Ubuntu 20.04 x64.

This is a thunderbird issue. Opening multiple of the same PDF in FIrefox works fine.
