User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:90.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/90.0

Steps to reproduce:

randomly, adress bar and search bar is not resonding. type something to search and hit enter. nothing happens. it is not related to text input. when i pasted a full adress doesn't woks either.
troubleshooting or removing add-ons didn't helped too.
ublock origin, foxyproxy and google scholar button. nothing more.

Actual results:

browser didn't navigate any adresses. didn't searched anything.

problem started with new ui. tried beta versions, 89 and 90 didn't resolve problem.

restrating solves problem, only for 10 minutes to 2 hours.

Expected results:

as usual, when i typed an address, browser might loads it.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Address Bar' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please revert this change in case you think the bot is wrong.

Component: Untriaged → Address Bar

I was unable to reproduce the issue you've reported in any of the latest Firefox versions.

Please test if the issue occurs in safe mode. Here is a link that can help you do that:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode

If the issue still persists, please test it using a new profile, you can find the steps to do that below:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-and-remove-firefox-profiles?redirectlocale=en-US&redirectslug=Managing-profiles#w_starting-the-profile-manager

What's the status of the system when it happens? Is there anything in Windows Task Manager occupying 100% cpu or memory?
Are you on a Solid State Disk or mechanical Hard Drive?
Could you pleast post a log from about:support?

It would also be useful to us if you could try to capture the slowdown with the Firefox Profiler, see https://profiler.firefox.com/ that would give us code hints to investigate.

address bar not responding

version is different but behavor is same as newer versions.

People have been filing similar bugs since last year: bug 1659609, bug 1651304, and their duplicates. It seems to be related to website logins. Some reports say that only the first site they try to load fails, but the screencast here shows other tabs are loaded.

walker1371, does this happen only after/when you log into certain websites?

actually, address bar issue doesn't happen when browser is newly re/started. works normally for an hour or more sometimes. then becomes not responsive without any warning.

pages loaded are working without any problems, unless you try to enter a url or a search string. i haven't tried to browse websites doesnt require login. but simple google search is also not responding.

this problem is in two different pc's, one for office work, one for home use, both have windows 10 with latest updates. firefox is also freshly installed many times with only sync enabled, no extensions, no other modifications.

All right, as Marco said a profile would be helpful. Are there any errors in the browser console? Does the network developers tools panel show anything? Other than that it's hard to say what the problem might be.

Same Problem with a new Installation. Maybe the company Firewall blocks the request to the OCSP Server.

Solution:
deactivate validation of certificates with OCSP in Setting - Securtiy - Certificates

No sry! The problem still exists!

Same problem. Within the last couple of weeks the problem occurs more often. 4-5 times each day. When the issue occurs the address bar doesn't work the next 5-20 min. then it restores back to normal (until the issue occurs again). Restart always fixes the issue right away.
The issue is on my company Windows pc.

The best thing you can do to help us, would be to capture a profile using the Firefox Profiler, when the problem happens. Without debug information we cannot really understand what is happening. See comment 3.

Here is a Firefox Profiler capture dump recorded while the issue occurred: https://share.firefox.dev/3yrjEch
I have also attached a video showing process related to the profile capture.
Another remark is that last time I experienced the issue I had a google search tab open. I noticed, that I could not perform a search with the embedded search form on that page either. So the problem is not exclusive related to address bar search. The form would not submit at all.

The profile doesn't show worrisome hangs, so this is more likely an unexpected code state, rather than a performance problem.
The cause for it can be too many, from add-ons to Firefox settings, network settings or third party apps. I also doubt this is an Address Bar bug, it is more likely a navigation bug, indeed also comment 13 reports this happened not just in the urlbar, and most reports are similar.

At this point unfortunately the only option is to go through the usual troubleshooting, to see if we can identify a common cause.
If after one of these steps the problem is solved please let us know.

  1. Ensure you are on the very last version of Firefox. There was a bug in old versions causing something like this.
  2. If you have add-ons managing pages/tabs like OneTab or similar try to disable/temporarily-remove them
  3. Clear the network Cache data under Privacy And Security
  4. Clear data for Google (or any not loading page) following this guide: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/clear-cookies-and-site-data-firefox#w_clear-cookies-for-any-website
  5. go to about:serviceworkers and unregister each one of them
  6. When it happens, do you see anything (errors) popping up in the Browser Console? (do not confuse it with the Web Console that only reports content errors, this is Browser Console under Other Tools)
  7. Could you please check if Safe Mode makes a difference (thus whether it may be an add-on): https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode
  8. Could you please check if a new profile is showing the same behavior (https://support.mozilla.org/kb/profile-manager-create-remove-switch-firefox-profiles)

Summary: adress bar and search bar is not resonding → address bar and search bar is not responding
Whiteboard: [closeme 2022-02-01]

As a follow up, I can update with my experiences. I followed the first 5 steps in the guide (comment 15) back in September when Marco posted it. That did not solve the problem, and I continued to face the issue on daily basis. I didn't see any errors or pop ups (step 6). Unfortunately I never finished following and testing step 7. and 8.
Thinking back now, I'm pretty sure I haven't seen the problem the last couple of weeks. Maybe something has solved the issue. I will take note if I see it again in the following weeks, and then give you an update here again.

additional information:
youtube search bar also don't resond when search string typed then hit search or hit enter. same issue as firefox main address bar.

how can i keep logs about what is happennig in my browser when search bars not working? can you suggest any tools?

Please see comment 15 and reply to the questions if you can: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1719040#c15

I am having the same issue. I tried step 7 (safe mode) but it didn't fix it. It will typically start working after a restart but only for a few minutes. I don't see anything in the browser console either. I just tried step 5 and I will report back here if it fixes anything
