User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:90.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/90.0

Steps to reproduce:

When I browse the web, Firefox occasionally replaces whole areas of the already rendered page with a solid rectangle in the background color of the html element. It happens on different sites and without any obvious triggers (like dedicated 3D canvas tricks or special interactivity).

Actual results:

In my casual understanding it looks like Firefox tiles the visible screen and just doesn’t render some tiles. For me it is in most situations the whole contiguous upper-left quarter of a page, but occasionally other parts of a page fail, too.

As soon as I interact with the page, i.e., select some text, the page will re-render and everything is fine, again.

Firefox changes the cursor in unrendered areas according to the content. So it definitively has knowledge about what should be there, too.

Expected results:

This behaviour started with Firefox 90. But it sounds similar to this v89 issue reported on Twitter: https://twitter.com/AmeliasBrain/status/1417687077555085312

Hi Manuel,

Is anything coming up in the Browser ? It is accessible via the three bar menu -> Web Developer -> Browser Console.
Can you add a screenshot of the issue?

Could you please answer the following questions in order to further investigate this issue?

1- Does this issue happen with a new profile? Here is a link on how to create a new profile: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profile-manager-create-remove-switch-firefox-profiles
2- Are you using add-ons? If so could you please list them? (you can try the issue while in Safe Mode. You can find helpful info here : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-using-safe-mode .)
3- Does this issue occur in the latest nightly version of firefox? Here is a link from where you can download it: https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/channel/desktop/

I've assigned a component in order to get the dev team involved, but if it's not relevant, please feel free to change it to an appropriate one.

Thanks for the report.
Best regards, Clara.

Hi,

the console messages (however, I do not know, if they are related to the issue or were already there):

[warning] Listener for event 'frame' did not return a promise. event-emitter.js:232:25
[error] Task cancelled [no further information given]
[log] WebExtensions: reset-default-search: starting. api.js:183
[log] WebExtensions: reset-default-search: has already ran once and saw panel, exit. api.js:210
[warning] Already started legacy listener for document-event on server1.conn0.parentProcessTarget2 resource-command.js:833:15

Screenshots are problematic, because apparently a re-rendering is triggered as soon as I hit the print button, which makes the error go away. However, I’ve added an “artist’s impression”, i.e., a GIMP’ed version of what it looked for me. (Note, that the boundaries of the box are thus not exactly like in the error.)

1) Unfortunately, I cannot test this. It’s my work machine, where I depend on the current profile.

2) Addons: four active addons, cf. about:support info below. I’ll try to run the browser without them for some time.

3) Same as (1), unfortunately. It’s hard for me to test during work on Nightly.

While adding the about:support info I had the same problem in a slight variant. And since I had the console open, some new messages appeared:

(all are warnings)

The issue was with the modal overlay dialog when pasting lots of text. The half-transparent black backdrop and about 1/3 of the dialog were invisible, revealing the content underneath.

Is this still broken in release 91? I wonder if bug 1721098 fixed this.

I’ve browsed the web for some days in v91 now, and it seems this behaviour doesn’t show itself anymore. Yes, it appears to be fixed. Thank you!
