Let's assume you name your search provider WebSearch1 and then rename it to WebSearch2, in the next update of the addon the search provider stops working.

This appears to be because SearchServices.jsm searches for the search engine based on the key and an update to the engine name does not change the key, only the _name inside values.

Is it feasible to use the extension ID instead of the search provider name for extension-provided search providers?

Which version of Firefox were you using for this? We fixed this back in Firefox 85 in bug 1690114.

I'm checking with the reporter on Issue with "chrome_settings_overrides".

No further information was received from the reporter, closing on the basis of the Firefox 85 fix.
