There was a preference that hided "recently bookmarked" from the bookmark dropdown menu. (bug 1248268)
Then there was a new menu called "recent bookmarks" added to the library submenu since Firefox 54 was released. (bug 1354159)
Unfortunately the number of items in this menu was hardcoded to 42, no good reason: https://hg.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/file/tip/browser/base/content/browser-places.js?revcount=480#l2103
I want to hide this menu so I think we need a preference to configure the number at least. There are still some people ask similar questions in the past few years.

Whilst Firefox does offer a high degree of customisation, it is not practical to allow everything to be customised. Supporting customisations does cause cost in terms of ongoing maintenance and other areas.
In this case, I don't see any strong reasons why we should allow the recent bookmarks to be customised away. There's a few cases of referring to privacy, however this is not primary UI, and you can achieve the non-recent functions via other methods without going into that menu.
Users have the option of switching to using the bookmark toolbar button, or simply ignoring the recent list - having it should not affect performance nor functionality. Hence I'm marking this as wontfix.
