User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/92.0.4515.159 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce:

I have 3 machines, two laptops and one desktop, running Firefox 91.0.1 on Windows 10, synced. I imported an app which was designed to allow me to switch between alternative bookmark sets, but it immediately messed up my bookmarks toolbar. So I uninstalled the app on all machines, and set about recovering my bookmarks.

I used Manage Bookmarks | Import and Backup | Restore - I chose the set of 19 August 2021 to restore. This seemed to work better than importing bookmarks from html.

Actual results:

I managed to get one set of bookmarks and the bookmarks toolbar working on one laptop (the most recent, therefore the most powerful). But on the other machines Firefox repeatedly crashed.

I tried and tried again, and on the desktop PC I eventually managed to get the full set of bookmarks and the toolber installed, but then the toolbar disappeared, following by the bookmarks.

I assume that I should be disabling sync during this operation, but have not tried that yet.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox but that didn't help, partly I assume because there is no facility to import bookmarks from html on first instal.

Expected results:

Bookmarks on all machines, and the toolbar, should have been successfully installed.

I did not send a file because when I attempted to, it caused the bug report to crash.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Sync' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please revert this change in case you think the bot is wrong.

Anyway, turning off sync seems the key to a successful backup. Once that was done, I was able to backup bookmarks and bookmarks toolbars on the 2 machines I had previously had problems with. Though what will happen when I turn sync back on is anyone's guess!

All fixed now. The key was to switch off all sync, import the same set of backups to each machine, sync one machine, and then progressively open the syncs on all machines.
