Details

(Whiteboard: [no-nag])

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:92.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/92.0

Steps to reproduce:

normal browsing, logging into different sites, closing, reopening the browser, etc.

the problem affects multiple versions (for several years), also the latest

Actual results:

suddenly, previously remembered login details for random sites disappear.

today I noticed the disappearance of login details for three sites in different domains

Expected results:

remembered login data should not disappear, of course

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Core::DOM: Core & HTML' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please revert this change in case you think the bot is wrong.

A couple of questions:

  • Are you using a Primary Password on this profile?
  • Do you have Sync enabled, and does the times these logins disappear coincide at all with using other devices?
  • Have you used the "Forget this site" feature recently?
  • Can you try enabling debug logging and let us know if there are any "Login" error messages when you open up about:logins?
  • If you are able, can you examine the logins.json in your profile folder, to see if the missing logins are still in there but not displayed for some reason.

Unfortunately, I am away from computers (home and work) for over a week and I will not be able to perform additional tests.
As for the questions:

  • I use the main password of my profile at work.
  • I'm using Sync and lost login credentials disappear on all devices
  • if I remember correctly, I used the "forget this site" function several times
  • after the login details were lost, I checked the logins.json file and there were no entries of relevant sites in it

Thanks for the response Marcin, so this sounds like Bug 702925 where using the "Forget this site" function will delete your saved logins for that site. Sounds like we should re-prioritize Bug 702925 as this seems to be happening more frequently.

Feel free to re-open this if you remember some other steps that occurred that are unrelated to the "forget this site" step.

no, this is absolutely not the case!
I last used the "forget this site" feature over half a year ago, and the remembered entries for sites last disappeared two or three weeks ago (just before reporting the problem), the day after I normally used them at work and at home.

as a supplement to the description of the problem: entries have been disappearing randomly for many years, but so far for me they were entries for insignificant websites. now entries for sites used almost every day have disappeared, and for the first time three at a time have disappeared

Hey Marcin, thanks for reopening this bug with that additional information!

Can you enable debug logging for password manager? https://wiki.mozilla.org/Toolkit:Password_Manager/Debugging This may give us a better chance of catching when a login is deleted when this occurs again.

Additionally, can you enable debug logging for sync? https://wiki.mozilla.org/User_Services/Sync/Debug_Sync Again, this may give us a better chance of seeing when these logins are deleted.

:markh, do you have any other suggestions on how to trace this issue?

Flags: needinfo?(markh)

Marcin, see Comment #6, forgot to needinfo on that comment.

Flags: needinfo?(jm_sz)

I've not seen reports of Sync doing this, but enabling success/debug logs for Sync will help us understand what's going on.

Additionally, can you enable debug logging for sync?

ok, I will start debug logging today (for both password manager and sync) and you'll get logs as soon as I detect another loss of login/logins

:Marcin please let us know if you have any news on this issue?

:Marcin please let us know if you have any news on this issue?

unfortunately not
I plan to make (I will try on the weekend) a bookmark folder with pages that have stored login details and check regularly (maybe 2-3 times a day?) if all the data is remembered. this will be a more proactive method and can detect data loss very quickly, even for pages that are rarely used

Thank you, meanwhile we'll keep looking into this from our end.

Closing as incomplete as we don't have actionable information yet. Please reopen when more details are available.
