User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64; rv:92.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/92.0

Steps to reproduce:

Click on bookmarks. Move cursor to folder with 30 or 50 bookmarks. Try to mouse up or down the list of bookmarks....Instead of moving up or down the list in sync with the cursor, the highlight lags way behind the movement of the cursor, causing a delay until the highlighted or selected bookmark catches up to the position of the Cursor. Since I move up and down the list of bookmarks in a folder dozens of times a day, this delay hurts big time the usability of Firefox.

Actual results:

Had the wait until Firefox indicated that the selected bookmark was the one to which I had moved the cursor. I had to wait until the slow highlighting moved up or down to reach the location of my selected bookmark in order to click on the bookmark that I wanted. This has never happened in 15 or more years of using Firefox.

Expected results:

For more than 15 years, as soon as you move the cursor to the bookmark, it is highlighted and can be clicked on with NO DELAY while waiting for the highlighting to move.

Suggestion: This bug seems to me to have similarities to, but is not identical to, Bug 1729756 which also is described as beginning with version 92.0 of Firefox and seems to involve some slowness of showing bookmarks.

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Firefox::Bookmarks & History' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please revert this change in case you think the bot is wrong.

Thanks for reporting this kmartinp.
I haven't been able to reproduce this issue. Can you please attach a performance profile to this bug?

TO Andrew Creskey:
Thank you for your request; it led me to learn more about the bug and I will describe what I learned below.
I had trouble using the performance profiler to respond to your request, and while trying to use that tool and read its documentation, I turned off one of my computer settings: namely, high contrast mode.
My vision is not great, so I use Windows in High Contrast Mode.
Once my display was set to regular windows color display, the bug vanished. The highlight in displays of bookmarks and folders kept up fine with the cursor...No lag.
Then I turned on High Contrast mode again: Bug was back. Big lags.
Then I checked Chrome and Edge bookmark displays, while using High contrast mode. Worked fine.

So now I know the bug is a clash between Windows High Contrast mode and Firefox, and that only Firefox is affected in this way, not bookmark browsing in Chrome or in Edge.
I would like to send you the profile you asked but I still haven't figured out how to upload the profile. Do I start the recording with Ctrl Shift 1 and Stop and capture it with Ctrl Shift 2? Or do I also use Ctrl Shift 2 to stop it? And once I see a URL and some kind of new info on my screen after hitting Ctrl Shift 2, is that URL the whole thing--and how do I get that URL into bugzilla or for you to access?

To be helpful, I have made a screen shot of the color theme I use in Windows High Contrast Mode, and I am about to attach that screenshot here in bugzilla. Is this enough info for you to fix the bug? Let me know. And thanks.

Thank you for the follow up, kmartinp. Apologies for the delay, I was on vacation.

I've shared your high-contrast setting finding and hoping that can help isolate this.

That's correct - you start profiling with Ctrl Shift 1 and stop and capture with Ctrl Shift 2.
This will open a new tab with the profile.
Once opened, there is a button near the top right that reads, "Upload Local Profile". Press this button and when it completes it will present you with a url in the form https://share.firefox.dev/{string}.

I'm not readily able to test Windows so I'm also asking to see if others can reproduce this.

kmartinp, can you confirm that this problem is seen when mousing over bookmarks from the Bookmarks menu?
It looks like we may have found the issue here https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1724617#c24

Yes, I can confirm that the problem is seen when mousing over bookmarks from the Bookmars menu. Here is a narrative of each of my steps I'm taking right now again to duplicate the problem:

  1. I move cursor over Boomarks in my top toolbar (and the tab "Bookmarks" highlights normally);
  2. I click on the highlighted tab "Bookrmark"
  3. A drop down display of many folders opens; normal speed apparently.
  4. I then try to move down to a folder in the dropdown display of folders...and going up and down that display is buggy and laggy, with delays until the highlighting catches up to the cursor position as I move up or down the list of folders.
In addition, as I continue, there are two kinds of bug/delay/ lag that can then occur if I rest the mouse on a folder which has a subfolder with many entries. These further delays can be described as folows:
  5. Once the folder containing subfolders is highlighted (after a lag), the 2nd level display of subfolder Titles opens rapidly, without delay..BUT the icons at the left of each entry in the subfolder display fill in slowly over a second or so....they twinkle on one after the other following the opening of the 2ndary subfolder display, while my mouse remains still and I am not moving it; And if I wait for all icons to become visible at tje left of all the subfolders and bookmarks in the list....OR if I don't wait....
  6. Once I move the mouse up or down the display in the sufolder list, there is a lag ..the highlight is noticely delayed and not moving promptly up or down the list with the cursor, as happened after I had first clicked on "Bookmarsk" to open the list of bookmarks.

In sum, in high contrast mode, I have a constant lag/delay uoing up or down any folder list in bookmarks, primary or 2nd level for subfolders, and also, in opening a 2nd level list of folder contents/subfolders (with 30+ bookmarks and subfolders at the secondary level) for the first time there is also a delay before the icon tabs populate the entire list....(although once populated, if I immediately repeat the whole thing from the beginning, clicking on the bookmark tab again to select bookmarks, the icons on a 2ndary subfolder listing that I just previously had to wait for filling in, are now all there and I don't have to wait again to see the icons fill in....But i still have the big lag/delay where the highlighting is a very slow crawl behind the position of the cursor up or down in the list.

Hope this helps.

:mak, could you have a look please?

Thank you for the investigation Andrew, this indeed looks like a dupe of Bug 1724617 that has a fix in Firefox 95, and hopefully it will be uplifted to 94.

Since this will be fixed in a future version, you can test the fix by using Firefox Nightly, but note that will dupe your current profile, because you cannot jump from Release to Nightly and back with the same profile. I hope you can find some workaround to keep using Firefox, until the fixed version is released, unfortunately we can't do much more.
