Back in the day there was the concept of a default smtp: the SMTP that your ISP provided and let you use for all sending needs, from any address. But only if connecting from within the network.

Since then laptops came in... and you're not necessarily connected to the ISP network. Many or most times even if you are, you're not allowed to send unauthenticated from arbitrary addresses.

Account setup will automatically create the SMTP for the account you set up as well, since many many years. The actual usage of global SMTP is likely not large.

Since using a global ISP SMTP will work poorly if you move between networks, and this is a fairly odd thing to have in the account settings, it's likely better to do a one time migration of what SMTP is used for a given identity, and avoid the strange implications of such a setup.

Hi, just to make sure - you are not talking about using the same SMTP for multiple accounts? We rely heavily on this feature. It is pretty common for our users to have more than one IMAP-Accounts (ege. group inboxes sometimes up to 20) but we are using the users personal account for sending.

It is about having one SMTP account (Thunderbird Outgoing account) and referencing that from many other accounts in Thunderbird.
If you want to use the same SMTP server that's fine. But the settings would be separate - just duplicated and not as a single copy of that SMTP account.

Okay - that is what I feared. This is exactly what we are doing, especially because those group accounts don't even have an own SMTP account. Also that would mean we would have to configure and maintain as many smtp configs as there are inboxes although they are exactly the same every time. A user changing his password would have to change it for every of those inboxes, as I said 20 is not uncommon to have....
