Steps to reproduce:
Open gmail and click on chat contacts
Actual results:
Nothing
Expected results:
Chat window should open. It does open in chrome and in Edge.
Tried safe mode, not change.

Does the problem still happen if you start Firefox in Safe Mode? (Safe Mode disables add-ons, extensions and themes, hardware acceleration and some JavaScript stuff in order to exclude some possible reasons for problems.) Solution discovered by accident.
I was using one of the colorful themes. I frequently change them. But all of the theme had the same result. No window. And again, my other gmail was also using the same theme and it worked for chat.
So, I decided to revert to default theme. Vuola. It worked.
But that wasnt enough. I tried the previous theme and it now worked as well. So my advice for anyone is to revert to default them and see if it works for you.

Problem appeared again this morning with default theme in gmail.
There is no problem with chat in gmail using chrome and Edge. So the problem persists and is a firefox issue.

It seems that the mere change of theme will fix the problem each time chat stops working.

I tried reproducing this issue on the latest versions of Firefox Nightly 94.0a1 (2021-10-04), Beta 93.0 and release 92.0.1 using various browser themes and gmail themes and chat opens every time.
Could you test this with a fresh new profile? You can find more about creating a new profile here : https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-and-diagnose-firefox-problems#w_6-create-a-new-firefox-profile .
If possible, you can test this issue on the nightly build as well. Download the build from : https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/nightly/all/ .

the thing is, is that my other gmail account does not have the same issue on the same computer. Changing my profile would not have anything to do with the problem if one gmail works and the other does not.

So I did the refresh and I will have to wait and see over the next few days.
After the refresh, my nice big frequently visited favicons are now all small as I have on a different computer. Hate the small favicons.

I BELIEVE THIS IS THEME RELATED. CHANGE YOUR THEME TO DEFAULT AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS.

Brief update, it fixed it in gmail for the small chat windows, but the full size chat interface at mail.google.com/chat/ is still busted with themes disabled.
