User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Win64; x64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/94.0.4606.61 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Open a page with italic chinese text (attached test_print.html) with Firefox
  2. Print the page with a physical printer
  • note that using Lexmark Universal v2 XL printer
  • note that the browser may use Microsoft Yahei
(or MingLiU if Chinese Traditional, Hong Kong S.A.R language support was installed)

Actual results:

The italic chinese characters are weirdly rotated/slanted when printed.
see https://drive.google.com/file/d/1tWZksb6AFuyGNCRo5YKrjTnfUUwkshMm/view?usp=sharing

which is different from what is seen on the print preview.

Expected results:

The italic chinese characters should follow the simulated italic as viewed in FF.
e.g. viewed in FF

  • The issue doesn't happen with Chrome on the same printer
  • The issue doesn't happen with same FF on another printer (HP LaserJet M605 PCL 6) see https://drive.google.com/file/d/1tWZksb6AFuyGNCRo5YKrjTnfUUwkshMm/view?usp=sharing
  • The issue doesn't happen in Microsoft Print to PDF
  • The issue is present in older FF version (89), did not test further in other versions as issue is not replicable with Chrome
  • The issue is present even when using different chinese font (i.e. using MingLiU if Chinese (Traditional, Hong Kong S.A.R) language support was installed and MingLiU is present)

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Core::Printing: Output' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please revert this change in case you think the bot is wrong.

Component: Untriaged → Printing: Output
Product: Firefox → Core

Setting S3 for now since it's not losing any contents.

Severity: -- → S3

This reproduces for me when printing to my HP LaserJet CP1525n using the (automatically-installed) driver "HP LaserJet Professional CP1520 Series PCL 6".

However, using the same printer with the driver "HP Universal Printing PS" (downloaded from the HP support website) the issue doesn't occur; the glyphs are slanted as expected (rather than rotated).

Status: UNCONFIRMED → NEW
Ever confirmed: true
Summary: italic chinese text are weirdly slanted/rotated when printed using FF in some printers → italic chinese glyphs are weirdly rotated (instead of slanted) when printed using FF with some printers/drivers
