Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/94.0.4606.71 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce:

System: Thunderbird: 78.13.0 (64 bit) ; UBUNTU V21.04 ; Gnome 3.38.5
NB: Message filtering has been operating correctly until "recently". I don't know exactly when it "failed" but I do periodic updates as set up by the Software Updater.

Now, in Thunderbird:
I select "Tools" -> "Message Filters" -> opens overlay.
I can select which account's messages I want to filter no problem.
I select a specific filter to edit or New to add a filter. Edit overlay opens.

Actual results:

In the editing overlay I can select any of the options and the drop down menu appears. However, none of the items on these menus is selectable; ie "greyed out".

Expected results:

Any of the drop down options should have been selectable.

I haven't seen this effect in any other application.
I have a total of 110 filters over 6 accounts. Is there a limit?

Having just upgraded my OS to Ubuntu to 21.10 and Gnome is now V 40.4.0, I can now operate the Thunderbird menus as before.

Problem "solved" by upgrade!!

Correction!!!

As stated above, I can get to the drop down menus. However, it doesn't scroll on the drop downs. I selects the first entry selected and freezes there :(. I can select the one I want, but I have to move cursor beside the drop down and then cross to the desired selection.

Problem still there. The clunky work around is to open the drop downs and move the cursor to my selection OUTSIDE the drop down and only enter the drop down at the selected item location.
How long will I have to keep do this???

Today updated Tbird to 91.7.0. [Ubuntu; 21.10 ; Gnome: 40.4.0] Drop down problem still there! i can open drop down menus. However, which ever item I select, it "freezes" and I can't select any others. Items on the selected sub-drop down menu are selectable but the same thing happens. I can't clear the drop down menus unless I recall the window.

Recent updates: TBird: 91.9.1 / Ubuntu: 22.04 / Gnome: 42.1
Message Filter "problem" of having to select drop down from outside the menu is still there!

Walt, can you reproduce?

Not with Thunderbird 91.9.0 from Fedora, or version 102.0b3 from Thunderbird on Fedora 35 Workstation, Gnome 41.

I'm a bit hesitant to update to Fedora 36 with Gnome 42, due to the age of my system.

Wondering if it could be a Wayland issue?

Jeremy, what Window Protocol appears in Help > More Troubleshooting Information?

I'm using the old X11 protocol.

Hi WaltS48, Just logged back in here. Apologies for long time! Thanks for your help.

Problem is still there!
Current system is now: UBUNTU 22.04 (LTS), Gnome 42.2, Window System Wayland (no version?), TBIRD 91.11.0 (64 bit). There have been TBIRD updates and I have hoped the problems would be solved with them.

The TBIRD > Help > More Troubleshooting Information area seems to have lots of "good stuff". Window Protocol shows "Wayland". Are there any other bits of info there that may be helpful.?

Other TBIRD problems reported elsewhere that I have seen are:

  1. SOLVED (?): a multitude of orange dots monotonically increasing with every separate window.
  2. NOT SOLVED: moving messages around to place in other locations. After "a while" TBIRD crashes and needs a restart. Probably a "linked list" problem. Part of Wayland?

Again, thanks for your help.
