User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 6.1; Win64; x64; rv:4.8) Goanna/20170101 PaleMoon/29.4.1
Steps to reproduce:
1- I downloaded the 91.2 (64b) windows pc version
2- I installed it while my 78 (32b) version was still installed
Actual results:
The installation wizard asked my credentials to create a new account/profile
Expected results:
The installation wizard should have asked me if I wanted to create a new profile or use an existing one and opened a listbox or some nice listing of all my installed profiles and wait for me to make a choice.

Since some time it's profile-per-install, so if you do multiple installations each will need it's own profile. Profile data is not backwards compatible so you can't (fully) go back and forth, or cross-use profiles.
When I installed v91.2, I went through the ad nihilo process of creating a new account/profile. When finished, I went into about:profile and I choose my old 32b default as the default one and it worked perfectly in TB v91.2 (64b) so... don't tell me tales about not being able to "fully go back and forth or cross-use profile". You're trying to avoid/kill my request which is PERFECTLY logic, sound and feasible.

Cross using 32 or 64 won't be a problem, cross using between versions will. This is what profile-per-install is protecting from.
It appears that I am cross using between versions (78(32b) <-> 91.2(64b)) without any problem ! What's the problem ?

You are misinterpreting comment 1 - but the instance/install/profile checking is now "complicated" so that's understandable.
Going FORWARD in versions in the same profile is not a problem - which is what you are wanting to do.
But you installed the app (in this case 91.2.0) in a different path/location, by definition Thunderbird defaults to wanting a new profile - it's part of the new rules. (Going forward or backward in versions/32bit vs 64bit doesn't matter - it's the location).
You are certainly good to go forward in release numbers using the same/old profile. But if you put the application in a different location it's up to you to (manually) point to the old profile.
"... installed the app (in this case 91.2.0) in a different path/location, by definition Thunderbird defaults to wanting a new profile - it's part of the new rules. (Going forward or backward in versions/32bit vs 64bit doesn't matter - it's the location)...."
Well... I STRONGLY OBJECT to this new rules. Rules are supposed to serve us and make our lives easier, not the opposite, thus the necessity to add a pre-installation question to the user : "Do you want to create a new account or use the one you used last time ?", kinda !
This is the crux of my request !
You say : " but the instance/install/profile checking is now "complicated" "
NO its NOT complicated ! How so ?

You just haven't come across the problems then. When running 91 the first time some data (address book, calendar data etc.) have been altered and if you try to go back to 78 they do no longer exist or are incompatible.
I haven't upgaded to go back to the previous version afterward but... I can conceive reasons for some users to do so and since I don't use calendar and notes and other TB features, only the mail feature, that can be the reason I haven't had any problem in cross version playing.
