User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10_12_6) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/94.0.4606.81 Safari/537.36

Steps to reproduce:

Unified view displaying multiple accounts merged. Selected email near top of list. Click delete button in email shown below.

Actual results:

Email previously at the bottom of the list is deleted instead.

Expected results:

Selected email should have been deleted.
If you let me attach multiple screen shots you could see what happens. In this one, "Receipt for Your Payment to Facebook Payments..." is selected above and displayed below. However, after clicking the Delete button, the "Halloween Sale" from the bottom of the list is deleted instead.

I thought we had such a report in the last couple years (not a unified folder iirc), but I'm not finding one in https://mzl.la/3pVVPc6

Component: Untriaged → Folder and Message Lists
Summary: Attempt to delete selected message deletes a different one → Attempt to delete selected message in unified folder view deletes a different (wrong) one
Whiteboard: [datalossy]

I'm looking at the images posted.
In first image :
"Receipt for Your Payment to Facebook Payments..." is selected
"Halloween Sale" is the last one displaying in the Message List.

"Receipt for Your Payment to Facebook Payments..." is then 'Deleted'

In second image:
"Receipt for Your Payment to Facebook Payments..." is no longer in the Message List because deleted.
"Halloween Sale" is the last one and it is still the last one in the Message List - it has not been deleted.

I am not seeing the problem "Attempt to delete selected message in unified folder view deletes a different (wrong) one" in those images.

I am seeing the 'Deleted' message content still visible in the 'Message Pane' in second image which sounds like a refresh issue.

Am I missunderstanding something?

I took several other screen shots when attempting to capture the situation and when I thought I was limited to only one or two to submit here, I may have sent the wrong combination. May I update you?

Screen Shot 1 2021-10-30 at 3.52.10 PM - "Receipt for Your Payment to Facebook Payments..." is selected - Halloween Sale is last. Delete is used...
Screen Shot 2 2021-10-30 at 3.52.17 PM - Normal behavior. "George Duke.." is selected - Halloween Sale is last. Delete is used...
Screen Shot 3 2021-10-30 at 3.52.22 PM - "George Duke.." is still selected - Halloween Sale has been deleted erroneously. "Don't forget to transfer.." is now the last shown. Delete is used...
Screen Shot 4 2021-10-30 at 3.52.25 PM - "George Duke.." is still selected - "Don't forget to transfer.." has been deleted. "Take 50% off .." is now the last shown.

please consider the recent 4 screen shots I added as proper reference. The first two are obsolete as I mixed up the order initially.

I see a restart to update prompt in those screenshots.

Still having the issue after restarting?

Unified Inbox:
Sorted by Date > Ascending - newest at the bottom.

First item - Receipt for Your Payment to Facebook Payments - a left click selection as contents are shown in Message Pane.
Then item is deleted - assumed via the header 'Delete' button and item is removed from the Message List but oddly remains visible in the Message Pane.

Attempt to delete next item - "George Duke..
When you say "George Duke.. is selected - do you mean a left click selected ?
In which case why is "George Duke.. not shown in Message Pane ?
Or do you mean this time "George Duke.. was a right click select and you selected delete from the drop down menu?

Several attempts to delete appear to be removing non selected items from bottom of list in Unified Inbox.
Query : Are those items being deleted from the account specific Inbox folder as well?

However, through out this period of deleting items, the first item deleted - Receipt for Your Payment to Facebook Payments - is still displaying in the 'Message Pane'.

I'm wondering if the 'smart mailboxes' folder and 'virtualfolders.dat' file are corrupted and gone awol.
Suggest a clearing up - flush out system to see if this fixes issue.

  1. Please set this setting: 'View' > 'Folders' > 'All'
  2. Help > More Troubleshooting Information
  3. Under Application Basics - locate 'Profile Folder' - Click on 'Open Folder' button
  4. Exit Thunderbird now - this is important
  5. Delete the following list of files:

global-messages-db.sqlite
panacea.dat
virtualFolders.dat
xulstore.json

  1. Click on 'Mail' folder

  2. Delete: 'smart mailboxes' folder

  3. Start Thunderbird

  4. Set view back to Unified.
    'View' > 'Folders' > 'Unified'

Please report back on results.

No. I mean that by normal action of deleting the previous message, the next one becomes selected automatically.

In which case why is "George Duke.. not shown in Message Pane ?

I don't know, do you? Its a peculiarity of this scenario that I didn't mention previously. The "Facebook payments" message seems to stay displayed throughout.

Or do you mean this time "George Duke.. was a right click select and you selected delete from the drop down menu?

no

Several attempts to delete appear to be removing non selected items from bottom of list in Unified Inbox.

I need to verify. I am not certain but assumed they were.

correct

Performed those steps. Will report back after evaluating results

I see a restart to update prompt in those screenshots.

Still having the issue after restarting?

no change

If you have not yet done so, I suggest you use the compact command on the file menu. The smart mailboxes are only as good as the indexes on the "real" folders, compacting will clear out the dead wood in your store and reindex the real folders.

Reporter, do you still see this issue when using version 102?
