Steps to reproduce:

In the unified folders view, messages sent by Gmail do not appear in the overview, under "sent", when GMAIL is in the French version (probably also for any non-English version)

In the French version, "[gmail] \ sent mail", is translated as "[gmail] \ messages envoyés"

The situation for this folder is as follows:

  • The messages do not appear in the overview, directly under "Sent", but the folder and its messages appear in the details by account, under "Sent". The folder seems therefore well recognized as a "sent" type folder by Thunderbird.
  • This problem concerns all the Gmail accounts and no other accounts (Hotmail, Yahoo ...).
  • This problem only concerns the sent folder, not the other unified folders.
  • We can correct the case, by going to the properties of the virtual folder, then "choose" and checking the correct folders. But when you quit Thunderbird and come back the messages no longer appear in the overview after refreshing the folders and the checkmarks for those folders have disappeared in the "properties\choose" screen.
  • We arrive at the same result by deleting in the profile of Thunderbird the folder "smart mailboxes" and the file "VirtualFolders.dat": at the first launch everything works, at the second once again we lose the messages in the overview for the Gmail accounts.
  • When looking at the contents of the files:
    In VirtualFolders.dat: the "sent mail" folder "translated" from Gmail does not appear.
    In "Smart mailboxes / sent.msf" this folder appears. This is probably why they continue to appear individually in the list.
  • The difference between the overview and the detail by account is obvious when the message counter is diplayed next to each folder.
  • When the Gmail mailbox on the server is changed to the English version (settings / see all settings / general / language / Gmail display language), and the sent messages folder is translated into "sent mail", everything remains OK.

The issue seems specific to French name of the Gmail "sent mail" mailbox.
I tested putting Gmail (on the web interface) in German, English, Italian, Spanish. In all those cases Thunderbird displays messages as expected.

FYI : my temporary fix : I created a smart search folder that mimics the expected behavior of the "Message envoyés" virtual folder, searching the various folders "Messages Envoyés" or "Envoyés" in all my accounts. And this search delivers the expected result.

Erratum: Search works first time...but when I restart Thunderbird, my Gmails accouts are again ignored by this bespoke search.
