Steps to reproduce:

Over in https://bugs.debian.org/998848 I recommended that debian build thunderbird against the system version of librnp.

Carsten Schoenert replied that this probably needs upstream work to make it straightforward to build against the system version of librnp, in case it's available.

I'm opening this request to track the need for that work.

I'm filing it against Thunderbird 91, since that's the version of Thunderbird that's in debian unstable right now.
