User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X 10.15; rv:94.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/94.0

Steps to reproduce:

Prerequisite: Sign with a Firefox account and enable syncing

  1. Go to "Settings"
  2. In "General" tab scroll down to "Language" section
  3. Change the browser's language to Bulgarian
  4. Apply & restart Firefox
  5. Open "Settings" again
  6. Go to "Sync" tab

Actual results:

At the top, where the profile image & email are shown, the text for "Manage account" is being translated as "Управление на сметка"

Expected results:

At the top, where the profile image & email are shown, the text for "Manage account" is should be translated as "Управление на профил" or something similar. Currently, the "account" text is translated as something similar to a "bank/checking account", and not something close to "user account".

The same issue can be observed in the Android mobile version of Firefox. Shall I create another bug in Fenix' GitHub repository?

The Bugbug bot thinks this bug should belong to the 'Cloud Services::Server: Firefox Accounts' component, and is moving the bug to that component. Please revert this change in case you think the bot is wrong.

I've already suggested a proper translation in Pontoon. I've done the same for Android as well. Hoping this will get approved soon, because it's really confusing for someone not that tech-savy.

Hi @Mihail, thank you so much for bringing this to our attention. If the proper translation is existing in Pontoon now, it should get pulled in with our next release, which happens every 2 weeks. If it's not already in place, please check back in another couple of weeks to see if your translation shows up as expected.

Thank you for filing the bug and reporting the problem. I did a search and multiple strings have the same issue. If you made the suggestions before the migration (converting some of the strings into the current Fluent format), your suggestions would be lost in the process. If they were approved, it would have been carried over. I will pick a string, ping the locale manager and add you to it, along with this bug. ID If we don't hear from him for a few days, please make suggestions for the strings identified in the link, I will approve them. How does it sound? For Android project, if you run into the same issue, report to the l10n PM.

Just to mention again that the issue is for all translations for the word "account" - it is incorrectly translated across all Firefox products as "сметка" (meaning an account in an institution - e.g. bank account), instead of "профил" (meaning user profile).

If this is the case, I think you, the locale manager, and the translator should have a discussion so you can run a sweeping update. Could you start a email thread on this? If you need me to step in, please cc' me. Feel free to communicate in Bulgarian so you can express the differences better.

The translation is not wrong. "Сметка" is the proper Bulgarian word for "Account", not "Профил".
So should stay as is.

Thank you for your comment. I wonder whether the team could check how some other companies translate these terms, like Google, Apple, FB or Amazon.

Out of curiosity, I checked the Microsoft glossary, and they use a third term: акаунт. The only place where they seem to use Профил is Skype.

Google, on the other hand, seems to use Профил, at least from checking the Google accounts page

Can it be that the usage changed over time? I clearly don't have knowledge about Bulgarian, but in Italian for some reason the English word stuck for online accounts, while we use an Italian word for bank related accounts.

You are absolutely right in your observations.
Apple and Amazon don't provide Bulgarian locale, so we can't check there. Microsoft uses both "профил" (profile) and "акаунт" (account). While I think that both are correct, "акаунт" isn't that often used, since it is literally the word "account" just written in Bulgarian and I don't think that we have it officially in our dictionary. Nevertheless, it's also a valid term, in my opinion. Some purists may disagree, which is perfectly fine, since it isn't that common.

Facebook also uses the word "профил". Facebook's translations are community-driven, meaning that a lot of Bulgarians can provide their own interpretation of the translation and whatever has the most votes, ends going live.

Another point - all 3 telecom operators use the term "профил" as well.
Of course, all of our banks use the term "профил" when it is for user profile, and the term "сметка" when it comes to user accounts in the bank (savings, checking, etc).

The same is true for Bulgarian - the word for bank related accounts is different from other words for online accounts. That's why I raised the issue. I've never-ever seen this word being translated as "сметка". I've also asked 10-15 of my relatives and friends, and all of them found the current translation confusing.
I've asked the locale manager where he's seen the term translated as "сметка", but I didn't get a response from him.

To sum up - the most common Bulgarian translation, when it comes to user account, is "профил". I'm opened to another word suggestion (like "акаунт"), but the current translation is really confusing for the users.

I'll close that as of now. If we need to start the discussion again, let's talk!
