RESOLVED DUPLICATE of bug 1684676

(Reporter: john, Unassigned)

Details

User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:94.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/94.0

Steps to reproduce:

For many months, I puzzled over an error that Thunderbird was giving me any time I attempted to save a draft message. The warning was basically "key expired" and my email address. It was only recently when I twigged to the fact that this message might be referring to my GPG personal key, and not some other mysterious key relating to the IMAP server that I was saving it. One doesn't immediately think encrpytion when a draft message is being saved on the IMAP server, as opposed to actually being sent.

Actual results:

Couldn't save draft messages for many months! Thought it was a problem with Outlook IMAP support, but it wasn't -- it was an expired GPG personal key. I reported it to our server people but of course they couldn't understand the problem.

Expected results:

The error message is far too brief. It should say that the message could not be encypted before saving, becuase the local GPG/Enigmail encryption key has expired. It should say that the key can be replaced or renewed by following some particular process -- eg a link to a help page.

We are now on version 91, and version 78 is nearly unsupported.
Please let us know how this does with version 91.

Version 78.14.0 was only just released on 7 Sept 2021...? Also, it seems that there are no newer packages for Thunderbird provided on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. Would be great if some updated packages could be provided -- I'll raise it via Ubuntu Launchpad.

I think the bug is basically a text problem, in any case. The error message just needs to be a bit clearer, instead of saying "key expired", it should say "GPG encryption key expired", or something like that.

In the meantime we have implement a notice to inform about the expired key.
We want to further improve feedback regarding the inability to save encrypted drafts in bug 1684676.
