Steps to reproduce:
Sending an E-Mail via SMTP and following configuration with Thunderbird 91.3.2:
Port: 587
User Name: t.maintz
Authentication method: Normal password
Connection Security: STARTTLS
Mailserver: Exchange 2016 CU22
Actual results:
Following error message occurs with Thunderbird 91.3.2:
The message was sent successfully, but could not be copied to your
Sent folder.
The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing
server (SMTP) mail.fz-juelich.de timed out. Try again.
Installing Thunderbird 91.0 fixes the error.
This behavior does not occur on all clients, but on multiple clients.
Expected results:
The message should be correctly moved to the sent elements without error message

I'm seeing the same error when connecting to smtp.office365.com with Thunderbird 91.4.1 (see the attached dialog box)
This is confusing for two reasons:
-
the message appears to contradict itself, because it says both that the message "was sent successfully" (first sentence) and "could not be sent" (second sentence).
-
if "could not be sent" (second sentence) refers to "could not be copied to your Sent folder", then it also doesn't make sense to attribute it to an SMTP timeout; in my case, the three "Sent folders" that are available are either:
- my Local Folders (not SMTP),
- my server-side Sent folder (using outlook.office365.com, which is accessed via IMAP, not SMTP), or
- the IMAP folder that the message being replied to is in (because "place replies in the folder of the message being replied to" is checked), which of course is also IMAP, not SMTP.
So none of these should be affected by any SMTP timeout.

It is also additionally confusing because if i click "OK" on the dialog box, i am not returned to the compose window, as the dialog box suggests.
For easy reading and full text searchability, the full dialog box error message is:
The message was sent successfully, but could not be copied to your Sent folder.
The message could not be sent because the connection to Outgoing server (SMTP)
smtp.office365.com timed out. Try again.
Would you like to return to the compose window?
[Cancel] [ OK ]

When sending another message, i got the same warning as was mentioned earlier, and then when i clicked "OK" i was shown this additional dialog box.
Clicking "retry" just showed it again, and clicking "Save" left me trying to figure out how it would be saved if not as a draft.
